RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) - A Mississippi high school teacher was allegedly killed by her 14-year-old daughter who was a student where she taught.

Rankin County Sheriff’s Office received a call on Tuesday around 5:07 p.m. about a shooting in the 200 block of Ashton Way.

WLBT reported that when deputies arrived, they found 40-year-old Northwest Rankin High School teacher Ashley Smylie dead from a gunshot wound.

Smylie’s husband told authorities that when he arrived home, he found his wife dead and his stepdaughter armed with a pistol. The man said his stepdaughter shot him in the arm, but he managed to take the gun from her, WLBT reported.

The teen then ran to the backyard, jumped over the fence and ran away. However, the teen was found not too far from the home, and she was arrested for murder and attempted murder.

Smylie will be taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

The teen will appear before a judge on Wednesday.

According to the school district’s website, Smylie was an algebra teacher.
