Quadriplegic footy star gets some miraculous news against all the odds three years on from horror accident that almost killed him

  • Ryan Wiggins is set to become a father
  • Footy star suffered life-changing injuries
  • Against all odds he has received amazing news

Ryan Wiggins has received incredible news, with the quadriplegic former footy star announcing he is expecting a baby boy with his partner, Lou Calvert.

Wiggins's life changed in 2021 when he was the victim of a near fatal accident in which he broke his spine and was placed in the ICU at the Royal Hobart Hospital before being flown to Melbourne,

As a result, fatherhood seemed out of the question, but in a miraculous turn of events, those doubts have been proven wrong.

'Since my accident I was told that kids were sort of out of the picture,' he told News Corp.

'But to see how I've turned that around with my physical health and now also expecting a little boy on the way is just super exciting.

'It was sort of a bit of a shock and still feels not real at the moment, but I'm sure as the weeks get closer to when the little fella's due, I think it will start to kick in.

'I guess with me playing football for such a long time, I'd love to have a little boy and hopefully he can have a kick one day.'

Calvert, a personal trainer, says she is grateful that they had success with the first round of IVF treatment. She is currently 16 weeks pregnant and in good health.

'We're very, very, very excited to have our little baby,' she said.

'We kind of only had the option of going down the IVF path. I'm so very fortunate that this little one was first pop.

'I've been very, very lucky to get away pretty much symptom free and so grateful for the team at TasIVF

'Touchwood I've skipped the whole morning sickness stuff and apart from being tired I'm otherwise very well.'

Wiggins, who is still involved with the Luaderdale Football Club, hopes his son will one day play for Tasmania.

'Lou and I do the strength work round at the footy club for them. I'm still involved with Cygnet as well, as obviously they hold big place in my heart.'

The baby's arrival is expected in September, and the couple will soon move into a new home at Opossum Bay.
