19-year-old shoots at motorist during road rage incident near Hilton Head Island: BCSO

A verbal argument between two motorists in Beaufort County Wednesday afternoon led to a teenager firing a stolen gun at the other driver.

Joshua Navarrette Castro, 19, is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, discharging a firearm into a motor vehicle, and possession of a stolen firearm, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office (BCSO).

According to the BCSO, deputies responded to a Bluffton area business shortly after 5:20 p.m. They met with a 22-year-old man who reported he was shot at while traveling on Fording Island Road.

The man told the deputies that he noticed a vehicle following him closely while he was leaving Hilton Head Island, according to the BCSO. After both vehicles crossed the Hilton Head bridges, the man and the other driver, later identified as Castro, engaged in a verbal dispute.

Castro then fired a gunshot into the passenger side door of the man's vehicle before turning around and driving back towards Hilton Head Island. The man said he pulled over and called deputies to report the incident, according to the BCSO.

Deputies say they spotted a vehicle matching the description provided by the man on William Hilton Parkway and conducted a traffic stop. Castro was identified as the driver.

After conducting interviews with the man and Castro and collecting evidence from Castro's vehicle, according to the BCSO, Castro was arrested and booked at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
