Recap from a dramatic weekend of Iowa high school state wrestling
Forty-two Iowa high school boys were crowned state champions over the weekend.
At 3A weight class 138, Koy Davidson (Fort Dodge) added a title to his name and denied history. Davidson stopped Waukee Northwest's three-time state champ Carter Freeman — in overtime!
Davidson stunned Freeman, but that's not the only person who couldn't believe what he saw.
Koy Davidson's grandpa, Tad Linder, sprinted from the stands to hug his grandson.
"He texted me last week and said, 'Hey Grandpa, after this tournament, let's take a vacation,'" said Tad Linder. "So, we'll go fishing somewhere in the spring or something."
At 3A weight class 165, Johnston's Jacob Helgeson rag-dolled Urbandale's Gabe Carver for the win.
Helgeson had four takedowns and a near-fall.
Helgeson clinched the crown for the second straight season.
Jacob's oldest brother, Caleb, is also a state champ. Middle brother Owen Helgeson is a two-time state place winner.
Now, younger brother Jacob can walk around the Helgeson house and say that he's the best.
"He's worked pretty dang hard, a lot more than a lot of kids, and I've been his drill partner all these years," said Owen Helgeson. "We've gotten in a lot of fights, sometimes we don't really like each other, we punch each other and stuff like that, but at the end of the day, we're just making each other better, and we love each other."
In 1A, Nodaway Valley's Ashton Honnold had fans on their feet in weight class 215.
Honnold got the takedown and pinned the 1-seed with a smile across his face.
The sophomore placed 8th last season at 195 but locked up the title this season.
