MOINES IS A LITTLE QUIETER TONIGHT. THAT’S BECAUSE THE WRESTLERS PACKED UP THEIR TOS AND WENT BACK TO THE GYM. 42 IOWA BOYS WERE CROWNED STATE CHAMPIONS, MAKING THEIR NAME A LITTLE BIT LONGER. COIN DAVIDSON OF FORT DODGE ADDED A TITLE TO HIS NAME AND DENIED HISTORY. WHILE DOING IT, DAVIDSON STOPPED WAUKEE, NORTHWEST THREE TIME STATE CHAMP CARTER FREEMAN IN OVERTIME. THE KID FROM FORT DODGE STUNNED FREEMAN. BUT THAT’S NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO COULDN’T BELIEVE WHAT HE SAW. YOU’LL SEE COY DAVIDSON’S GRANDPA, WHO SPRINTED FROM THE STANDS TO HUG HIS GRANDSON. THERE HE IS, GRANDPA HAD TOLD ME ABOUT THE NATURE OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP. PRETTY CLOSE. YEAH, HE TEXTED ME LAST WEEK AND HE SAID, HEY, GRANDPA, AFTER THIS TOURNAMENT, LET’S TAKE A VACATION. SO WE’LL GO FISHING SOMEWHERE IN THE SPRING OR SOMETHING. JOHNSTON’S JACOB HELGESON RAGDOLLED, URBANDALE GABE CARVER FOR THE WIN. HELGESON HAD FOUR TAKEDOWNS IN A NEAR FALL THAT, COMBINED WITH GOOD DEFENSE, HELPED HIM CLINCH THE CROWN FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON. JACOB’S OLDEST BROTHER, CALEB, ALSO A STATE CHAMP, MIDDLE BROTHER, OWEN HELGESON, IS A TWO TIME STATE PLACEWINNER NOW YOUNGER BROTHER, JACOB CAN WALK AROUND THE HELGESON HOUSE AND SAY THAT HE IS THE BEST, THAT HE’S WORKED PRETTY DANG HARD, A LOT MORE THAN A LOT OF KIDS, AND I DON’T KNOW, I’VE BEEN HIS DRILL PARTNER ALL THESE YEARS. WE’VE GOTTEN IN A LOT OF FIGHTS. SOMETIMES WE DON’T REALLY LIKE EACH OTHER. WE PUNCH EACH OTHER AND STUFF LIKE THAT. BUT AT AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE’RE JUST MAKING EACH OTHER BETTER AND WE LOVE EACH OTHER. 15 THIS IS OVERTIME HONOLD GOT THE SINGLE LEG TAKEDOWN AND PINNED THE ONE SEED WITH THE SMILE ACROSS HIS FACE. LOOK AT HIM STARE DOWN THE RAF BLOODY MOUTH AND ALL THE SOPHOMORE PLACED EIGHTH LAST SEASON AT 195 BUT LOCKED UP THE TITLE AND HI

Forty-two Iowa high school boys were crowned state champions over the weekend. At 3A weight class 138, Koy Davidson (Fort Dodge) added a title to his name and denied history. Davidson stopped Waukee Northwest's three-time state champ Carter Freeman — in overtime! Davidson stunned Freeman, but that's not the only person who couldn't believe what he saw. Koy Davidson's grandpa, Tad Linder, sprinted from the stands to hug his grandson."He texted me last week and said, 'Hey Grandpa, after this tournament, let's take a vacation,'" said Tad Linder. "So, we'll go fishing somewhere in the spring or something."At 3A weight class 165, Johnston's Jacob Helgeson rag-dolled Urbandale's Gabe Carver for the win. Helgeson had four takedowns and a near-fall.Helgeson clinched the crown for the second straight season. Jacob's oldest brother, Caleb, is also a state champ. Middle brother Owen Helgeson is a two-time state place winner. Now, younger brother Jacob can walk around the Helgeson house and say that he's the best."He's worked pretty dang hard, a lot more than a lot of kids, and I've been his drill partner all these years," said Owen Helgeson. "We've gotten in a lot of fights, sometimes we don't really like each other, we punch each other and stuff like that, but at the end of the day, we're just making each other better, and we love each other." In 1A, Nodaway Valley's Ashton Honnold had fans on their feet in weight class 215. Honnold got the takedown and pinned the 1-seed with a smile across his face. The sophomore placed 8th last season at 195 but locked up the title this season.
