Nature discovery tour at lagoon

A guided nature discovery tour is from 10 to 11 a.m. April 6, starting at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, 2710 Manchester Ave., hosted by the Nature Collective. Participants can see various birds and plants at the lagoon where freshwater and saltwater meet. The Nature Center Loop Trail is intended to be accessible for all. San Elijo Lagoon Family Day

A Family Fun Day starts at 11:30 a.m. April 7 at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, 2710 Manchester Ave. The focus is on “Traveling Seeds.” Highlights include hands-on activities, craft-making and animal encounters led by rangers. Coyotes topic of talk at lagoon

Batiquitos Lagoon will put on a presentation on the natural history of coyotes at 10 a.m. April 13 led by Project Wildlife rehabilitation specialist Kelly Wallace. The talk will cover how coyotes are rehabilitated, their interaction with other predators and how best to coexist with them. The free, family event is geared to adults and kids, age 12 and older. Health & Fitness Expo and race

The Carlsbad 5000 features a day of racing April 7 on the coastal streets of Carlsbad and a Health & Fitness Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 6 on Grand Avenue between Carlsbad Boulevard and Washington Street. New Village Arts stages ‘The 39 Steps’

New Village Arts presents the comedy play “The 39 Steps” from April 5-May 12 at The New Village Arts Center, 2787 State St. The production, directed by Dr. AJ Knox, is adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and based on the movie by Alfred Hitchcock. The Flower Fields in bloom

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch is open at 5704 Paseo Del Norte. The venue features 55 acres of giant tecolote ranunculus along with family-oriented activities and special events. Additional attractions include a Sweet Pea Maze, a butterfly garden, Santa’s Playground, an American flag of flowers and a Mediterranean Garden. San Diego Writers Festival

The San Diego Writers Festival is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 6 featuring 90 speakers at the Coronado Public Library, 640 Orange Ave. Highlights include a slew of author talks, workshops, food, live music and tent crawl prizes. Author discussions cover topics ranging from Writing About Place, Words Birthed From The Borders and Getting Published to The Art of Leaving Everything on the Page, Black Authors Speak Out and Writing From our Immigrant Hearts. There will be talks on creating comic books, mysteries, fantasies and thrillers along with a poetry reading and open mic. The event kicks off with Gill Sotu and the Naruwan Taiko Drummers and concludes with an interview with Patty Lin, author of “End Credits: How I Broke Up with Hollywood.” Admission is free. Free library concert

The Friends of the Encinitas Library presents Ben Rosenblum’s Nebula Project in a free concert from 2 to 3 p.m. April 7 at the Encinitas Library. Rotary Club holds Mariachi Festival

Mariachi Los Camperos is the featured performer for the Route 78 Rotary Club’s 10th annual Mariachi Festival on April 7 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N Escondido Blvd. Opening acts include Tierra Caliente Academy dancers, Rancho Buena Vista Mariachi and 9-year-old vocalist LuMaya. A VIP “Tacos and Tequila” tasting social and silent auction is from noon to 12:30 p.m. and tickets are $100, including the concert from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert only are $25 and $50. Volunteers sought to clear trails

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park’s trails maintenance volunteer unit is looking for volunteers to help with trail maintenance. The group clears trails of brush and fallen tree branches and works on grading on over 80 miles of park trails. Work party days are four hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Lions and Forward Club put on Chili Cookoff

The Lemon Grove Lions Club and Lemon Grove Forward Club, which are volunteer groups that support the local community, host a Chili Cookoff from 6 to 9 p.m. April 6 at St. John of the Cross Parish Hall, 8086 Broadway. The event will feature a chili tasting contest, where attendees help pick the best chili. Highlights include music, a cash bar, a raffle and a silent auction. Free ‘History Alive’ talk

The Lemon Grove Historical Society presents a free “History Alive” talk led by the legendary Ilse Hanning, the “Den Mother of Lemon Grove,” at 7 p.m. April 4 in the H. Lee House Cultural Center, 3205 Olive St. Hanning, known as the Lemon Grove School District’s first female principal and district superintendent in the 1970s, will look back at the school district and discuss the changes from the mid-1970s to the 21st century. The Toe Tappers are seeking tap dancers older than 55 who are interested in performing with a senior tap dance troupe. TrueCare expands services

TrueCare, a nonprofit community health center serving North County and South Riverside County, expanded its services in Oceanside and provides acupuncture and chiropractic care at its new health center at 3998 Vista Way, Suite G. The 1,300-square-foot center has three exam rooms and is set to serve more than 6,300 patients annually. TrueCare offers a sliding scale of low- to no-cost services for self-paying patients who qualify, along with flexible payment options. Veterans advisory group meets Monday

Emerging Issues Forum at chamber

An Emerging Issues Forum is from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. April 4 at the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, 928 N. Coast Highway. Voices of Our City Choir to give performance

Voices of Our City Choir is slated to give two live readings from its musical about life on the streets at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. April 14 in Moxie Theatre, at the Aztec Shopping Center, 6663 El Cajon Blvd. The choir, which is made up of current and formerly homeless people, got national attention from an appearance on “America’s Got Talent” several years ago. The show is put on in partnership with La Jolla Playhouse and Moxie Theatre. Voices of Our City Choir has 225 members and has helped over 75 of its members get off the street and into housing. An art exhibit, “Connecting en la Cocina: Empowerment, Resistance & Wisdom-Keeping,” curated by Jenn Frost Moreno and Norell Martinez, featuring art activist Antonia Davis’ installation “Because We Eat - How Growing Our Food Affects Farmworkers,” and pieces by Mariana Raquel, Way of the Sacred Mountain and Teyana Viscarra and works from other local artists, runs through April 7 at Centro Cultural de la Raza, 2004 Park Blvd., in Balboa Park. Event marks National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

The Armed Forces PB&J Classic to mark National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day will be held at noon April 6 aboard the steam ferry Berkeley at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, 1494 N. Harbor Drive. Step by Step 5K Walk benefits folks with Parkinson’s

The Parkinson’s Association of San Diego puts on its 22nd annual Step by Step 5K Walk from 8 a.m. to noon April 6 at Liberty Station, 2640 Cushing Road. International car show in La Jolla

The 18th annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is slated to return to La Jolla from April 19-21 at Ellen Browning Scripps Park, 1100 Coast Blvd., featuring a display of more than 170 international cars. The show, themed “World Class Cars, World Class Experience,” will celebrate the “Timeless Elegance of the Roaring 20’s and the Glamorous 30’s.” Highlights include commemorative artwork by Scott Jacobs. Curebound, a San Diego-based philanthropic organization, will host its annual Padres Pedal the Cause, in partnership with the San Diego Padres, on April 7 at Petco Park. Participants can select from three cycling courses (25, 40, 55 or 75 miles), which will take riders over the Coronado Bridge. Volunteers sought to beautify Azalea Park

A community cleanup and beautification event is from 9 a.m. to noon April 6 at 4036 Pepper Drive hosted by Caltrans, Clean California and I Love A Clean San Diego to beautify the Azalea Park area. Volunteers can pick up litter, work on the Azalea Park Water Conservation Garden, restore park benches and tables, remove invasive plants and plant native species, or install interpretive signs. San Diego Native Garden Tours

The California Native Plant Society will give Native Garden Tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 6-7 at various locations in San Diego County. This year’s theme is “Planting Animals,” highlighting the ties between native plants and the animals that depend on them. The event features the gardens of several “visionaries,” Dennis and Pamela Mudd in Poway and Jim Smith in Del Mar. Together they created Calscape, an online tool for the home gardener. The San Marcos Spring Fling & Street Fair is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 7 along Via Vera Cruz. The 33rd annual event is expected to attract thousands of attendees and will feature more than 225 artisans and crafters, retailers and nationwide vendors, live entertainment on two stages, carnival rides and a fun zone along with a Rhythm, Brews & Wine Garden. Author to speak at Cal State San Marcos

Assistance League puts on a Garden of Giving Gala

Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito based in Encinitas will put on a Garden of Giving Gala from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 13 at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, 1505 Lomas Santa Fe Drive. Highlights include live and silent auctions and entertainment by comedian Carol Johnson, who will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies and auctioneer, and harpist Naomi Alter. A three-course lunch will be served; there will be a no-host bar. Tickets are $100. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit’s philanthropic programs that serve local children and adults.
