RHS drama department to stage ‘Mermaid JR’
Mermaid 320

The Riverbank High School Drama Program continues its 2023-24 school year season this weekend with a slight twist, staging a production of the Disney classic, The Little Mermaid JR.

Journey “under the sea” with Ariel in this full-scale musical performed by Riverbank High School and Cardozo Middle School. In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home – and her fins – behind and live in the human world above.

But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the one whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR is a hauntingly beautiful story for all ages.

Featuring irresistible songs and dances including, “Under the Sea,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” and “Part of Your World,” memorable characters you may recognize from the Disney movies, and costumes, set, and lighting designs created by Riverbank High School art and drama students, this performance is appropriate for all ages.

The production’s music is composed by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and book by Doug Wright.

There are several opportunities to see a performance, at the Black Box Theatre, on the RHS campus. The first will be on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m., with two shows on Saturday, March 23 at noon and 6 p.m. The final performance will be on Sunday, March 24 at 2 p.m.
