Best Credit Cards for Young Adults

Chase Freedom Flex℠ *

[ jump to details ]

The Chase Freedom Flex℠* mixes and matches consistent bonus categories with rotating quarterly purchase categories to help maximize your cash back. And with no annual fee, this card is a no-brainer for someone relatively early on in their credit card journey.

Annual Fee: $0

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: Though advertised as a cash-back card, it actually earns Chase Ultimate Rewards® for extra versatility in how you redeem points. Plus, in addition to a cash-back welcome bonus, the Freedom Flex also comes with a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 20.49% - 29.24% applies. Balance transfer fee of up to 5% (min. $5) of the amount of each transfer applies.

[ jump to details ]

Rewards: Earn 2% cash rewards on purchases.

Welcome Offer: Earn $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months.

There’s also an introductory APR offer: 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, then a 20.24%, 25.24%, or 29.99% variable APR applies. Bilt World Elite Mastercard®

[ jump to details ]

The Bilt World Elite Mastercard® (rates & fees) stands out for being the only credit card that earns rewards on rent payments without incurring extra transaction fees. Since rent can be one of the highest line items on a young adult’s budget, rewards add up fast.

Rewards: Earn 1 point per dollar on rent payments without the transaction fee (on up to 100,000 points each calendar year), 3 points per dollar on dining, 2 points per dollar on travel (when booked through the Bilt Travel Portal or directly with an airline, hotel, car rental or cruise company), and 1 point per dollar on other purchases.

Welcome Offer: This card does not offer a welcome bonus

Annual Fee: $0

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: Not only is it easy to earn Bilt points, but you have many options on how to redeem them. One of the most valuable choices is transferring points to partnering hotels or airlines for travel redemptions. Cardholders also receive cell phone protection (subject to $25 deductible) and travel insurance when using their card to pay for eligible charges.

Methodology

Forbes Advisor considered dozens of credit cards that may be accessible to adults with no or limited credit history, similar to what a young adult may expect. Cards were graded based on numerous factors including:

  • Annual fees
  • Welcome bonus offers
  • Ongoing reward rates
  • Introductory and ongoing APRs
  • Additional cardholder benefits

Card features we expect cardholders to use the most often were weighted more heavily in our ratings. Altogether, the factors came together to provide a star rating for each individual card.

Afterwards, cards were compared amongst similar cards in their primary card category (e.g. student cards) as well as within the young adult credit card category as a whole. This allowed us to rank each card and determine the best credit cards for young adults on this list.

Should Young Adults Have Credit Cards?

Getting a credit card as a young adult is one way to help build credit. Eventually, this credit history can help you obtain mortgages, car loans or even an apartment lease. So, the earlier you start, the sooner you can get started building your credit. Credit cards can also make purchases more convenient and provide more purchase protections than debit cards.

However, young adults should only have credit cards if they expect to be able to use their credit responsibly. If the temptation to make purchases you can’t afford is too high to control, you aren’t ready for a credit card.

Which Type of Credit Cards Should Young Adults Choose?

Young adults should consider their income and credit history (if any) while choosing a credit card. Student cards, secured credit cards and cards for someone with fair credit are all specialty cards that might be a good fit for a young adult. For young adults with good credit, there are additional options to consider, such as cards with introductory 0% APR or the ability to earn rewards.

How To Compare Credit Cards for Young Adults

When evaluating credit cards for young adults, consider:

  • Annual Fees: Some cards may be available without an annual fee while others cost $95 or more per year.
  • Reward Options: Some cards earn rewards on every purchase, such as cash back, points or miles. The earning structure can vary considerably, with some cards having elevated purchase categories, others having rotating bonus categories and others earning at a flat rate for all purchases.
  • Credit Score: Though a factor for all potential cardholders, credit score and credit history can be a big determinant of which credit card young adults should choose. Young adults are more likely to have no or limited credit history or to potentially have lower credit scores.
  • Deposit Requirements: Secured credit cards can help you qualify for a card more easily but they also require you to fund the card with a refundable deposit equal to your credit line. So, a $500 deposit could help you establish a $500 credit line.

How Many Credit Cards Should Young Adults Have?

There is no set number for how many credit cards young adults have. The best number for you will depend on how many cards you can responsibly manage, how many you qualify for and how many cards provide benefits or rewards that are meaningful to your purchase habits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How old do you have to be to get a credit card?

To get a credit card solely in your name, you must be 18 or older in the U.S. You’ll need to show proof of income in order to qualify. You’ll have more options for unsecured cards once you turn 21.

What credit score is needed for young adults to get a credit card?

Some cards for young adults are designed to accommodate people without a strong card—or even people with no credit score at all. Secured cards and student cards are good places to start if you don’t have good credit. Often, the best rewards cards will typically recommend good to excellent credit in order to qualify and are something to aim for as you get older and build more credit.

What is the easiest credit card to get for young adults?

If you have funds available, secured credit cards are typically the easiest cards to be approved for. These cards require you to supply a deposit as collateral for your account. Student cards can also be easier to get since they are designed for people who may not have full-time income.
