A 15-year-old girl and a 37-year-old woman were injured Wednesday when Omaha police officers shot and killed a dog police said was “aggressive.”
The incident happened on the second floor of a downtown apartment building at 305 S. 16th St., near the 16th and Farnam Streets intersection, at 11:18 a.m.
According to police spokesman Lt. Neal Bonacci and a police press release, two officers went to the building in response to a trespassing call. While there, police said, they heard a person screaming. The officers saw two dogs, including a “large-breed, Rottweiler-type dog,” growling and barking at each other.
A group of bystanders tried to separate the dogs, but were unable to do so, Bonacci said. After the officers rushed up the stairs, they told the bystanders to back up. One officer fired his weapon, and a bullet struck and killed the Rottweiler-type dog. Rottweilers are working breeds with generally protective natures and can weigh more than 100 pounds, according to the American Kennel Club.

Seconds after the officer shot the dog, Bonacci said, officers realized that two of the bystanders, the girl and the woman, were hit by either projectiles or debris. The girl and woman were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center for injuries not believed to be life-threatening, according to police after an earlier report stated the girl was in serious condition.
Police are conducting an internal investigation into the incident, which was captured on officers’ body-worn cameras.
