A soaking rain will give way to a pleasant afternoon
Showers last through midday Tuesday, and then the rest of the week looks drier. Check the video forecast for the latest
STEADY RAIN COMES TO AN END
The rain will eventually end from west to east across Alabama after midday Tuesday. Sunshine will breakthrough the clouds by late afternoon. Highs today will reach the upper 60s and low 70s. The evening weather is calm and quiet. Lows dip into the 40s.
QUIETER DAYS AHEAD
March is known for the rough weather it often brings, but this March ends on a nice, quiet note following the wind, rain, and storms on Tuesday morning.
Cooler, drier air blows into the state Tuesday afternoon and evening, and another "push" of cool air arrives Wednesday night into Thursday. That will keep temperatures a bit below average for the next few days.
Wednesday looks calm and cool: a morning low in the upper 40s followed by a partly sunny afternoon in the middle to upper 60s.
Thursday is breezy and cooler still, and many of us could be as cold as 35 to 40 degrees by Friday morning. The weather warms up quickly for Good Friday, Saturday, and Easter Sunday.
EASTER WEEKEND
This weekend will bring gorgeous weather to Alabama, and March will go out like a lamb on Easter Sunday.
Friday morning will begin cold and dry in the upper 30s to lower 40s, and temperatures will rise to the upper 60s and lower 70s in the afternoon. That looks fairly standard for late March.
Saturday and Easter Sunday are even warmer as high temperatures approach the mid to upper 70s. Both days feature very nice early Spring weather: cool mornings, warm afternoons, and no threat of rain.
Sunrise services on Easter will be cool and dry this year. Expect temperatures in the 50s with a light wind and a mostly clear sky around 6:35 a.m. when dawn breaks Sunday morning.
LONG LOOK TOWARD THE ECLIPSE
The total solar eclipse is now two weeks away, and our long-range model guidance now sees April 8th's weather in the path of totality.
In Alabama, Birmingham's eclipse will be a partial one. Only 88% of the sun will be blocked when it reaches the peak around 2 p.m. on April 8th.
Model guidance is not looking helpful for most of the South and Midwest at this point. The American-run GFS model and its ensemble, the GEFS, both suggest cloudy and potentially rainy weather on that day.
Two weeks is an eternity in the forecasting world. In fact, it is so far out there that we really have zero confidence in anything specific. We will watch this weather setup closely and keep you updated on how guidance is trending until the point that a real forecast can be made.
