Miami-Hamilton put a sour end to the season for the University of Maine at Augusta women’s basketball team on Tuesday afternoon.
Led by Leah Abribat, who scored 18 points, the Harriers beat the Moose 72-57 in a United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II consolation game on the campus of Richard Bland College in South Prince George, Virginia.
Shalaya Heath had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Laci Reinhart added 13 points for Miami-Hamilton (10-10).
UMA was led by sophomore guard Alisyn Alley, who scored a game-high 25 points. Brianna Poulin added 11 points for the Moose (21-8).
Tied 44-44 entering the fourth quarter, Abribat scored 12 of her 18 points in the period. The Harriers outscored UMA by a 28-13 margin in the fourth, shooting 11 of 23 (47.8 percent) from the field. Abribat was also a perfect 4-for-4 on 3-pointers.
The loss wraps up UMA’s third consecutive trip to the USCAA Division II national tournament. The Moose were knocked out of the winner’s bracket with an 81-50 loss to Cincinnati-Clermont on Monday afternoon. UMA finished with its second consecutive 20-win season, a first for the program. Head coach Heath Cowan has also recently been name the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Coach of the Year.
Most of the UMA roster is expected to return next season as the Moose graduate one player, fifth-year forward and Monmouth Academy alum Kaeti Butterfield, one of the team’s two captains.
