Update (03/18/2024): The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reported that Carson Hughes’ autopsy was completed Monday morning. It preliminarily revealed that Hughes’ cause of death was cold water drowning.

The DNR reported that no other evidence of injury was discovered. Hughes’ official cause of death is pending final autopsy results and toxicology reports.


RIPLEY COUNTY, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Natural Resources recovered the body of 18-year-old Carson Hughes from Versailles Lake in Ripley County on Sunday night.

According to a press release, conservation officers found Hughes in six feet of water by utilizing sonar devices.

The Ripley County Coroner pronounced Hughes dead at the scene. Officials will conduct an autopsy to help determine Hughes’ exact manner and cause of death.

Hughes was reported missing on Friday evening. The DNR indicated that conservation officers found his vehicle near a boat ramp in Versailles State Park.

Officials disclosed that Hughes’ vehicle was unlocked with the keys inside when they found it. An empty kayak was also seen resting in the water nearby.
