THIS IS WLWT NEWS FIVE LEADING THE WAY. WELL, THE BODY OF A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR FROM SOUTHEASTERN INDIANA RECOVERED FROM THE LAKE AT VERSAILLES STATE PARK. THANKS FOR JOINING US HERE AT 4:00. I’M ASHLEY KIRKLEN, AND GOOD AFTERNOON TO YOU. I’M SHEREE PAOLELLO 18 YEAR-OLD CARSON HUGHES WAS REPORTED MISSING ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON. HE OFTEN VISITED THE PARK TO TAKE PICTURES OF NATURE AND WILDLIFE THERE, AND WLWT NEWS FIVE’S KARIN JOHNSON LIVE FOR US IN THE TEENAGER’S HOMETOWN OF OSGOOD, INDIANA. KAREN, I KNOW THE CORONER JUST RELEASING A PRELIMINARY CAUSE OF HIS DEATH. YES, SHEREE. AFTER CONDUCTING AN AUTOPSY, THE CORONER RULED THE PRELIMINARY CAUSE OF HIS DEATH WAS A COLD WATER DROWNING. NOW, TONIGHT, WE ARE IN THE TOWN OF OSGOOD, INDIANA. THIS IS A VERY SMALL TOWN OF ABOUT 1600 PEOPLE. SO, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, HIS DEATH IS HITTING PEOPLE HERE EXTREMELY HARD. CARSON WAS A SENIOR AT JACKSON DALE HIGH SCHOOL, WHERE HE WAS A THREE SPORT ATHLETE. HE HAD PLANS OF ATTENDING PURDUE TO STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING ADMINISTRATOR AT THE SCHOOL SAY HE WAS A NATURAL LEADER, A QUIET LEADER WHO LED BY EXAMPLE. HE HAD A PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY AND OFTEN WENT TO VERSAILLES PARK TO PHOTOGRAPH WILDLIFE AND NATURE. FRIENDS BELIEVE THAT’S WHAT HE WAS DOING THERE FRIDAY AFTERNOON WHEN HE DISAPPEARED AFTER SEARCHING FOR HIM ALL WEEKEND. HIS BODY WAS LOCATED IN THE LAKE YESTERDAY. HIS KAYAK WAS ALSO LOCATED IN THE WATER. THOSE CLOSE TO CARSON SAY HE WAS AS A PATIENT YOUNG MAN WHO LOVED SHARING THE BEAUTY OF SOUTHEASTERN INDIANA THROUGH HIS PHOTOGRAPHY. WHEN YOU REALLY TAKE TIME TO PAUSE AND LOOK AT IT, IT’S REMARKABLE WHAT HE WAS ABLE TO CAPTURE. UM, AND SOMEONE WHO GREW UP IN THIS AREA AND SPENT A LOT OF TIME OVER SALE STATE PARK, NOT KNOWING THAT THAT WAS THE BEAUTY AND THINGS THAT WERE THERE THAT THAT HE WAS ABLE TO CAPTURE AND SHOW TO OTHERS WAS, WAS, WAS PRETTY SPECIAL IN HOMES AND BUSINESSES HERE IN OSGOOD HAVE TIED RIBBONS AROUND TREES AND LIGHT POSTS, BLUE AND RED RIBBONS TO REMEMBER CARSON AND ALSO TO LET HIS FAMILY KNOW THEY ARE NOT ALONE. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources provided new details Monday, releasing a preliminary cause of death after crews recovered the body of a missing 18-year-old male in Versailles State Park Sunday.After three days of searching, police found the body of missing 18-year-old Carson Hughes.Indiana Conservation officers said they found Hughes in six feet of water at the Versailles State Park on Sunday around 6:50 p.m.Police said Hughes was located with the use of officer divers utilizing sonar equipment.The 18-year-old wildlife photographer went missing Friday after officials said he was last seen in the park taking pictures. Hughes father was the first to call 911 when he went to check on him and noticed something wasn’t right. It's not clear how he ended up in the water.Indiana DNR said an autopsy was conducted Monday morning, ruling the preliminary cause of death to be probable cold-water drowning. said no other evidence of injury was present. Officials said a final autopsy report and cause of death are pending toxicology results.
