Dancing with the Stars judge Arthur Gourounlian has said the recent referendum result around the definition of the family was "kind of disappointing."

The couple have a little girl, Blake, who was born by surrogacy by husband Brian Dowling's sister Aoife in September 2022.

The couple offered a window into their surrogacy journey through their RTÉ documentary Brian & Arthur's Very Modern Family, which chartered the highs and lows of them becoming fathers via surrogacy.

Speaking to RTÉ.ie, he said: "As we know from Brian and I, there are so many different types of families these days - everybody's so different, the times have changed.

"Obviously, I couldn’t vote, because I’m not Irish, I wish I could have helped," he said. "I think all families should be recognised, not only LGBTQ+ families - everybody should be respected, everybody should be recognised, everybody should be helped in different ways."

Earlier this week, the couple announced they are expecting a second child by surrogate.

"We're having a second child and people are saying, 'Ohh it's a sin. You can't have that'. Everybody's so, so, so different."

So how is he feeling this time round with baby number two on the way?

"Do you know what? It’s like a walk in the park! I'll tell you why - because the first one, you don't know what you're doing – you’re getting ready, you’re running around, buying baby stuff. You have already done it, because Blake is already 18 months.

"Once we announced it, I got to relax. Now we can go buy baby stuff, now we can organise baby's arrival. I feel kind of ok - no stress at all!"

Gourounlian confirmed that Brian's sister Aoife is acting as a surrogate again.

"She's been absolutely incredible. Since day one, she knew we wanted siblings for Blake.

"We've been so loud about [wanting to] have siblings for Blake. But when she can said, ‘Listen, I know you want to do this and I really want to help you again.’ We were like, ‘Are you serious?’ I made sure. She said yes," he said.

"It's been amazing and she’s just been incredible. She moved in actually with us a month and a half ago, so we’re going to look after her."

"Everybody's saying 'two under two - double trouble' with the baby... there’ll be around 21 months between them," confirming that the baby is due around July.

"Exciting times, new chapters, new adventures, I can’t wait!" he said.

With Dancing with the Stars coming to a close on Sunday, what can he tease about next week’s grand finale?

Not much, it seems.

"Can I be honest with you? I'm like yourself - I don't know exactly what's going on. I just know there's a big finale ready. That’s all I can say.

"I think to me, it's the best season I've ever worked on Dancing with the Stars personally. It’s been so, so strong. Everybody’s been outstanding."

On his standout moment so far, he said all of the dances in dedication week.

"The dedication was very personal - dedicating [a dance] to someone and the memories - all that stuff is very emotional to me. So obviously they made me cry at that that week. Dedication week is always very strong to me - it's close to my heart."

The dancer becomes emotional when asked to whom he would dedicate a dance.

"I always say my mother's my idol, my hero. She made me the man I am today.

"But also I would dedicate it to my dad because he never saw me, what I've done all my life," referring to his late father, who died from a brain hemorrhage aged 45, when Gourounlian was only 16.

"You know what I mean - everything I achieved, he never saw it.

"So I would have probably have a mixture, mom and dad."

The Dancing with the Stars final kicks off at the later time of 7pm on Sunday 17 March on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
