Breaking down Seahawks picks in new ESPN 7-round 2024 mock draft

Earlier this week, we broke down NFL.com’s picks for the Seahawks in Chad Reuter’s new four-round mock draft. Overall, we weren’t huge fans of the haul the Seahawks came away with. So, this morning we set out to see if we could find a better group of picks to break down. For that we will be relying on ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller, who has a new seven-round mock draft that just dropped. Here’s a look at who Miller picked at each spot for Seattle and our analysis.

2024 NFL mock draft: Seahawks go BPA in 3-round projections

Pick No. 16: Washington OL Troy Fautanu

Troy Fautanu has become the go-to pick in mock drafts for the Seahawks when they don’t trade down from this spot. We have no objection. Fautanu offers familiarity with offensive line coach Scott Huff and fills an immediate, near-desperate need at left guard – where there are no options currently on the roster. More importantly, Fautanu could eventually take over at left tackle for Charles Cross if he winds up being a top-10 bust.

Pick No. 81: Texas LB Jaylan Ford

Here’s a name we haven’t seen connected to the Seahawks much, with most mock drafts having them target Michigan’s Junior Colson at this spot. Ford comes in almost the exact same-sized package and has matched or bested much of Colson’s production at the college level. One big difference is ball skills, where Ford has a significant edge. He totaled six interceptions at Texas, while Colson had none at Michigan. Another strong pick.

Pick No. 102: Utah S Cole Bishop

Here’s another popular mock pick for the Seahawks. Cole Bishop was a standout at the Senior Bowl, which is always a green light to connect a prospect with Seattle. During his time at Utah Bishop filled out the box score, posting 7.5 sacks, 21.5 tackles for a loss, three interceptions, 12 pass breakups and four fumble recoveries. If the Seahawks are going to draft a safety, waiting until Day 3 is the right time to do it.

Pick No. 118: Notre Dame CB Cam Hart

Another surprise pick here from Miller, and it’s one we really like. Notre Dame’s Cam Hart has the requisite size and length for a Seahawks cornerback, coming in at 6-foot-3, 202 pounds with 33″ arms. At the Scouting Combine Hart showed off tremendous athleticism, posting a 39.5″ vertical, a 10’10” broad jump and a 4.5 second 40-yard dash.

Pick No. 179: UConn DE Eric Watts

Eric Watts comes a whole lot bigger than the usual Seattle defensive lineman, checking in at 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds. Length, strength and positional versatility are the name of the game here. Over the last two seasons at UConn he totaled nine sacks and 16.5 tackles for a loss.

Pick No. 192: Michigan LB Michael Barrett

Using another pick on an off-ball linebacker is a bit of a head-scratcher for us, but at least this one comes with a connection to head coach Mike Macdonald – who coached him at Michigan during the 2021 season as their defensive coordinator. Michael Barrett also has a ton of experience, having appeared in 61 games over the last five years at Michigan.

No. 235: Michigan TE AJ Barner

Miller goes back to the Michigan well here for the Seahawks’ final pick in his mock. Tight end should be on the team’s list and they’re lucky to land one this good in the seventh round. Barner (6-foot-6, 251 pounds) posted an 82.2 overall grade last season, which was the fourth-highest in the nation at his position.
