Gardai seize four ‘improvised’ explosive devices after swooping on van in Dublin as bomb squad called and man arrested

The suspected cannabis and scrambler bike were seized in separate searches conducted by cops

FOUR explosive devices, suspected cannabis and a scrambler bike were seized by Gardai in Dublin over the weekend.

A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested in connection with the discovery of the "viable improvised explosive devices" after cops swooped on a van.

Gardai made the seizure during searches in the Ronanstown area of the city at around 3:40pm on Sunday after a search of the van was conducted.

The Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called and requested to attend the scene.

They safely removed the explosive devices.

The arrested man is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, at a Garda station in the Dublin area.

In a statement this morning, a Garda spokesman said: "Gardai arrested one man and seized four explosive devices, suspected cannabis and a scrambler bike during searches in the Dublin 22 area on the afternoon of Sunday 24th March 2024.

"At approximately 3:40pm, a van was searched by Gardai in the Ronanstown area where four viable improvised explosive devices were seized.
 
"A male (40s) was arrested in connection with the incident, and he is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, at a Garda station in the Dublin area.
 
"The Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was requested to attend and safely removed the explosive devices."

During subsequent searches in the Ballyfermot and Ronanstown areas, Gardai also seized a "small quantity" of suspected cannabis and a "scrambler bike".

All drugs seized are now subject to examination by Forensic Science Ireland.

Gardai confirmed that investigations into the seizures are currently ongoing.
