Police investigate alleged Fortress Capital investment fraud

Police are investigating an alleged investment fraud that has left backers ranging from a Manchester United footballer to members of a south London church facing significant losses.

Fortress Capital Partners, an unregulated lender that is owed millions of pounds by borrowers including a business owned by the former agent of Gareth Southgate, the England football team manager, collapsed into administration in September last year.

More than 230 investors, including some who put in their life savings, as well as a number of celebrities, lent Fortress money.

Administrators at Begbies Traynor have received about £21.4 million in claims from unsecured creditors, but it is estimated that they will receive only about 10p in the pound.
