PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — A bond posted to cover possible road damage connected to construction of a 34-mile electricity transmission line and substation in northeastern South Dakota has been released.

The state Public Utilities Commission made the decision on Tuesday at the request of NextEra Energy.

The $500,000 bond was posted in 2019 for a 230-kilovolt transmission line between the company’s two Crowned Ridge wind projects and the Big Stone substation operated by Otter Tail Power.

The governments for Codington and Grant counties and for eight townships have confirmed that roads repairs were complete, according to Miles Schumacher, a Sioux Falls attorney representing NextEra.

The commission granted the release 3-0. “It appears everybody that needs to sign off has signed off and it’s timely to do this,” commissioner Chris Nelson said.

The commission also approved a request to transfer responsibility for the Keystone pipeline permit to a new company known as South Bow that is a spin-off from TC Energy. All of the insurance, personnel and operations will be part of the transfer, according to William Taylor, a Sioux Falls attorney representing the company.
