SPERRY, Okla. — A man is in custody after police say he shot at officers during a chase that ended through a brick wall in Sperry.

Steven Phillip Ballard was booked into Tulsa County Jail. Police say he was driving a stolen vehicle and led them on a chase, shooting at them before crashing in Sperry.

Just before 11 p.m., officers responded to a flock hit in the area of Admiral and Sheridan. Officers located the car on East Admiral just east of Yale going westbound.

Officers tried to pull over the suspect later identified as Ballard. Ballard ignored police and drove at high speeds on North Peoria, which stopped police from pursuing due to the dangerous speeds.

Ballard then passed another officer near MLK Jr. Boulevard, firing shots at officers which began another chase.

"Because of the speed, and I think he was turning off headlights, that just creates a pretty dangerous situation for the public," Tulsa Police Capt. Matt Arnold said. "Then when another officer saw him after we had terminated a mile or so away, he started taking shots at officers and that’s when we re-engaged the pursuit."

The chase then went into Sperry where Ballard crashed into a brick wall near North Cincinnati Avenue and East Main Street.

"It was a vacant shell of a building so there was no front of the building. The gate he went through what used to be the building. There’s no ceiling and then there was a rear wall that he crashed through," Capt. Arnold said.

A hole is left where the car went through with bricks, wood and even a piece of the front gate scattered on the ground.

Police said after crashing, Ballard ran out and hid under a truck at a nearby residence.

Police had a helicopter on scene and shortly after a K-9 unit found Ballard and took him into custody.

Police found a gun and shell casings inside the car.

Police said no officers were injured during the chase, but Ballard was taken to a local hospital for a minor cut from the collision.

"We just have some officers that are really shaken up, but everybody’s OK. No cars hit, no officers hit," Capt. Arnold said.

Tulsa Police were assisted by Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, Sperry Police and Osage County Sheriff's Office during the chase.

"Anytime we have someone taking shots at officers, we have to consider that if he’s willing to shoot at officers, he’s willing to shoot at the public. That creates a continuing threat for the community and we have to address that threat," Capt. Arnold said. "The way we do that the safest way possible is to do that with a large amount of officers. With numbers we can do things much safer."

In a similar situation back in 2022, that same building caught fire after another chase ended with a suspect crashing into it. The suspect from 2022 died in the hospital.

The town of Sperry hoped to salvage the building, which was used in the film "The Outsiders."

Gary Coulson, neighbor of the building, wants to make sure damage like this doesn't happen again.

"It's sad. It's sad that we will have people jump into vehicles and do this kind of thing," Coulson said.

Coulson said that C. Thomas Howell, who plays Ponyboy Curtis, was scheduled to visit this weekend and reenact a movie scene but after the damage, it isn't safe to do that.

"We're gonna try to save that wall. Here we are again trying to save it for a second time," he said.

Ballard was booked into Tulsa County Jail on multiple charges including multiple counts of shooting with intent to kill, eluding, possession of a stolen vehicle and more.
