KEARNEY — A man awaiting trial on murder charges is accused of assaulting another inmate.
At around 10:30 on the morning of March 8 a fight broke out at the Buffalo County Jail that led to multiple assault charges. Romeo Dupree Chambers, 26, who is being held on a 2022 murder charge, faces another assault by a confined person charge.
According to a guard's account of the situation, the fight started when Chambers went into another inmate's cell. When the inmate saw Chambers he threw something towards the suspect. According to court documents, video surveillance footage showed Chambers leaving the other inmate's cell and then a physical altercation began in one of the dayrooms between the two suspects.

There where multiple fists thrown between the two inmates until the fight ended when both calmed down. The other suspect, Jeffrey Lee Cash — who is in jail for a breaking and entering charge — is also facing an assault by a confined person charge.
A preliminary hearing for Chambers is scheduled for March 29 in Buffalo County Court. A court date for Cash has not been set.
This was Chambers second physical altercation at Buffalo County Jail since Jan. 29.
