VALLEY, Ala. (WTVM) - “The board unanimously voted last night to put things on pause until the new administration has the opportunity to come in and put there spin on it,” said Chambers County Superintendent Casey Chambley.

Just four weeks ago, the Chambers County School Board held a groundbreaking ceremony in celebration of the new Chambers County High School to be built in Valley. Now, construction equipment is sitting still. Chambley says the county was heard loud and clear.

“We felt like and the board felt like that the election and the way the election went that the people of Chambers County voted that they were not happy with some of the direction,” he said.

Zenda Staples, who lives north of Lafayette, says she’s “...very happy they stopped the construction.”

“I’m very happy for my grandbaby sake because she would have to ride too far. She’s only in the fourth grade and she has a long time to go to school,” said Staples.

Staples says she’s worried the long bus ride will have an effect on their school performance.

“Forever! Their mind won’t be functioning right. I think it would make their grades fall. I really do,” she said.

Dr. Chambley says the board has decided the new Superintendent should have a say in the future plans when they assume office in January 2025.

“We felt like it was appropriate for the upcoming administration and upcoming new board member to be able to have some say what, where, when, why and how,” he said.
