LOS ANGELES – A new chaperone policy at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance will be in place for anyone under 18 years old beginning Friday afternoon.

The policy states that as of March 1, all minors must be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older after 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

One adult can accompany up to four minors but must remain with them at all times.

The Los Angeles-area mall made the changes after a massive brawl in December of last year when approximately 1,000 juveniles came to loot and damage the property.

Responding law enforcement agencies shut down the mall and some surrounding streets.

The incident resulted in multiple arrests and injuries.

In August of last year, a video showed a large group of teens chasing a boy through the mall and knocking him down.

The group then surrounded the boy and began kicking and beating him.

Security was increased at the Del Amo Fashion Center following the incidents but the new chaperone policy was drafted after hearing from residents and community leaders.

Guests can and will be asked by mall employees to show identification for proof of age.

Acceptable forms of ID include a state-issued driver’s license or ID card, a military ID, a school ID card or a passport.

The ID must include a photograph and date of birth, according to the policy. Those without acceptable identification will be denied entry or asked to leave the property.

Mall officials provided a statement to KTLA saying:

“Del Amo Fashion Center is among the most protected properties in the area, and we take very seriously our responsibility to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for our shoppers, employees and retailers. We continuously invest in our industry-leading safety and security program, and the introduction of a Youth Supervision Program is the latest step in those efforts. Requiring adults to accompany youths during specific hours at the center will help us maintain a family-friendly shopping environment for all of our guests, including kids.”
