Genesis unveiled the G80 Magma Special at the 2024 New York Auto Show as an enhanced version of the regular G80, featuring improved driving performance. This elegant sedan was showcased alongside GV60 Magma Concept, the GV80 Coupe Concept and the X Gran Berlinetta Concept.
We want to focus on the G80, though, because as far as we’re concerned, Genesis really knocked one out of the park with this design. Just think how far they’ve come from what the first-generation G80 looked like, to how much potential we see on this newer iteration.

It’s an extremely elegant design, and Luc Donckerwolke, the man who also penned the likes of the Bentley Flying Spur and various Lamborghinis in the early 2000s, should be proud.

With its elegant sloping roofline and curvaceous styling, the second gen G80 is hard to miss. Add the right size wheels, a sporty body kit and a vibrant color and you might just end up with one of the best-looking mid-size premium sedans in its segment. Seriously now, don’t tell me you’d rather have something like a Lexus ES over a nicely specified G80. I don’t even want to hear it.

Speaking of G80 specs, this Magma Special model that Genesis unveiled at NYIAS this year is stunning. The carmaker aims to produce a high-performance ‘Magma’ variant for each production vehicle in its current lineup, looking to maximize both aesthetics and performance.

I wouldn’t go as far as to call them BMW M alternatives, but more like BMW M Sport rivals – where the G80 Magma could maybe challenge the likes of the M550i in terms of “street cred”. We’ll have to wait and see though.

Visually, we’re dealing with a lower and wider air intake at the front for improved cooling, carbon fiber elements (mirror casings, rear diffuser, trunk lid spoiler), tinted windows, and large 21-inch Titanium-colored wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. The prototype on display in New York also appears to have less ground clearance than a regular G80, which is a good thing as it helps it take a more aggressive stance on the road.

We expect the mods to extend to the interior as well, similar to the GV60 Magma Concept with its Nappa and suede leather bucket seats, orange stitching and piping, that type of thing. Basically, it should make for a more dynamic environment than what you would otherwise get with a regular G80 sedan.

There’s a kicker though. Unfortunately, the G80 Magma Special, the car you see here on display, will be available exclusively in the Middle East. I know, I’m saving the worst news for last. It’s a shame, really, because the U.S. market would have loved this specification. This sedan would look right at home while parked somewhere on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

As for G80 specs currently available to U.S. buyers, the best you can do is go for either the 375 hp 3.5T AWD model ($64,250) or the Electrified G80 with its 365 hp, 282-mile range and $74,375 starting MSRP.
