SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police say six people were injured, including three who were stabbed, during a fight outside a downtown funeral home Tuesday afternoon.

Officers received multiple reports at about 1:30 p.m. of a fight that resulted in injuries outside the Neil O'Donnell funeral home, 372 E. 100 South.

Officers were still working to confirm details of what happened, but said six people were taken to hospitals from the "chaotic scene," said Salt Lake police spokesman Brent Weisberg.

Three people outside the funeral home suffered stab wounds ranging from minor to serious, but none of the injuries were considered to be life-threatening, according to police.

Initially, police reported a fourth person was shot during the incident and was critically injured with potentially life-threatening injuries. Since the press conference, however, doctors have been unable to confirm that the individual's injuries are from a gunshot, police said. That person was still in surgery.

Witnesses told police there was a vehicle involved in the incident that left the scene at a high speed; police located and stopped the vehicle at 49 W. 300 South.

A gun was discovered in the vehicle, police said. Three people were in the car, two of whom had suffered minor "physical" injuries and were transported to a hospital. The third person was detained by police for questioning, Weisberg said.

Weisberg said a motive for the incident has not yet been determined. Police don't know yet how many people were involved, but investigators say everyone involved had been attending an event at the funeral home before the fight occurred.

No one has been arrested yet, police said, and the incident is still under investigation.

100 South was closed from 300 East to 400 East and 400 East was shut down from 100 South to 155 South.

"I want to recognize the response from our police officers," Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said in a statement. "Several of our officers provided immediate, life-saving measures to the victims. This type of incident is extraordinarily rare for our city. I know our detectives are working quickly to determine the motive for this incident, but I am relieved to know that based on the preliminary investigation, this was not a random attack."
