NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) - For the first time ever, early voting for the presidential primary got underway in Connecticut on Tuesday morning.

It was slated to run through Saturday, and polling locations were set to be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the secretary of the state’s office.

“This is a historic moment for Connecticut,” said Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas. “We now have so many more opportunities for people to go out and vote. If you have a last-minute emergency or a childcare issue, you no longer have to worry. You can have your say, your day.”

As of late Tuesday, Thomas offered some statistics on vote totals.

Early voters

  • Democrats – 3,367
  • Republicans – 1,584
  • Total voters - 4951

Absentee Ballots (as of end of day Monday, March 25)

  • Democrat Returned – 2,996
  • Democrat Issued – 5,351
  • Republican Returned – 1,476
  • Republican Issued – 2,454
  • Total Returned – 4,481
  • Total Issued – 7,827

Total Registered Voters (as of March 26, 2024)

  • Democrats – 805,838
  • Republicans – 469,577

Thomas said her office received no reports of major systematic or legal issues.

One of the other major changes implemented this year was that voters won’t be voting at their usual polling place.

Here is a list of the places people can cast their votes.

After voters have their IDs checked, a label is printed to prove that a vote was cast.

That goes into an envelope, where they will eventually place their filled out ballot and then they’ll drop it into the ballot box.

The actual primary was set for April 2.
