Donald Trump Corrected by Sean Hannity Live On-Air

Donald Trump was corrected live on-air by Fox News' Sean Hannity during an interview at the Mexico border.

Trump accused President Joe Biden of only visiting the southern border on Thursday after learning about his visit.

"He found out that we were coming, you and I made this agreement two weeks ago," Trump said.

Hannity interrupted the former president, saying that the interview was actually arranged "a month a half ago."

"Oh really," Trump laughed. "That's interesting."

The Context

Trump spoke to Hannity as both the expected 2024 Republican presidential candidate and Biden visited the southern border on the same day, with immigration set to be one of the main hop topic issues leading up to November's election.

The clip of Trump appearing to get his dates mixed up was posted on social media by Biden's 2024 campaign team, who have frequently deflected criticism about the president's age and cognitive abilities by suggesting that the 77-year-old Trump also can appear confused and rambling in his public speaking.

What We Know

Trump used his interview with Hannity in Eagle Pass, Texas, to attack Biden on a number of policies, including the record levels of illegal migrant crossings at the border that have occurred during the president's time in office.

"It's the worst border ever in the history of the world. There's never been a border where 50 and 60, maybe 80 million people have already crossed, and I think nobody has any idea what the number is," Trump said.

"Who can want this? Who can want millions of people from lots of bad places pouring into our country," Trump added. "This is just the beginning.

"I call it migrant crime. I really call it Biden-migrant crime, but it's too long, so let's just call it migrant crime and everyone's going to know it's because of Biden."

Discussing the president's visit to Brownsville, Texas, Trump suggested Biden and his team "went to the wrong area" as it does not see high levels of migrant crossings like Eagle Pass.

"They went to an area that [Texas Governor Greg Abbott] and myself have done a good job on, and essentially nobody is coming through," Trump said. "This area's tough."

The White House has been contacted for comment via email.

Views

On Thursday, Biden urged Trump to "join" him in finding an immigration solution, including convincing lawmakers to back the long debated border security and foreign aid bill, which was blocked by the Senate amid opposition from the former president and leading Republicans such as House Speaker Mike Johnson.

"Here's what I would say to Mr. Trump," Biden said. "Instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation, join me, or I'll join you, in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan security bill."

What Next

The debate surrounding immigration looks set to remain a key topic in the run-up to November's presidential election.

A recent poll showed that immigration is considered to be the biggest problem facing the nation. The results, based on a February 1-20 Gallup survey, revealed that 28 percent of Americans consider immigration to be the top issue facing the country right now. The last time voters believed immigration was the most important problem in the U.S. was in July 2019.
