England to play without kit names for dementia awareness

England to play without kit names for dementia awareness

Something a little different that you might notice tonight - the England men’s team will play without names on the back of their shirts during the second half of the friendly against Belgium as part of their partnership with Alzheimer’s Society.

This change from the first half to the second half of the game is designed to draw attention to memory loss, the most commonly associated symptom of dementia, which is caused by Alzheimer’s.

A worthy and important cause.

England vs Brazil lessons: Why England look so defensively vulnerable

England vs Brazil lessons: Why England look so defensively vulnerable

If the critique of Gareth Southgate is that, historically at least, he has been too conservative against better opposition, then that did not apply against Brazil.

Even without Kane, England played through Brazil’s pressure, camping in their half, and pressed aggressively. England matched Brazil for shots (14) and slightly edged possession. Yet it was Brazil, not England, who were devastating in transition at Wembley.

It brought England their first defeat since France knocked them out of the 2022 World Cup; the first defeat at Wembley since 2020. The biggest concern for Southgate was not that England lost, but how they lost.

They will want to tighten up against Belgium tonight.

Last time out: Belgium

Last time out: Belgium

A couple of hours earlier on Saturday, Belgium could not get past Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

The two teams played out a goalless draw and it was actually the hosts who probably should have won the match.

Brighton's Evan Ferguson saw his penalty saved by Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels in the 28th minute.

There wasn't much else to write home about in that one!

While the scoreboard showed that England conceded just one goal against Brazil, it should have been far more.

In fact, the visitors created seven big chances at Wembley, more than England conceded at the entirety of the 2022 World Cup or Euro 2020.

The Athletic's Liam Tharme looked at why Southgate's side look more defensively vulnerable than ever — you can find it below.

England suffered their first defeat at Wembley in 22 games three days ago.

Brazil substitute Endrick, 17, scored the first goal of his international career to stun Southgate and his players.

We'll be bringing you analysis from that match shortly - but if you want to relive the action play-by-play, check out our live blog from the game here.

Southgate full of praise for Rice

And the respect shown by Rice towards his international manager was reciprocated by Southgate.

"You get a feel for a human being, and often their family play a big part in that," said the England manager. "With Dec you could sense that stability, that maturity in the decision-making process that he’s going through. And of course he’s led from a very young age at West Ham as well.

"He’s already gained some good experiences and I’m pushing him in that aspect as well. Because it would be easy to take a little step back as we’ve got a lot of older players here, but some of our young ones have got great leadership already.

"They’re more than entitled to be bossing the older ones round a little bit as well, and being demanding of them and of us as a coaching staff, and driving the team, he’s got all those qualities and the respect of everybody to do that."

Speaking after Southgate yesterday, Rice could hardly hide his excitement at the prospect of captaining his country.

"I was speechless to be honest, absolutely lost for words, when he (Southgate) said to me last night I was going to be captain," he said.

"I gave him a hug, shook his hand, and said thanks very much. I owe him a lot. Since I first came into the team he’s always made me feel at home, I’ve always felt so comfortable playing under him.

"It’s an absolute honour, you can see it in my face.”

Declan Rice will captain England for the first time in a few hours' time.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference yesterday, Gareth Southgate confirmed that the Arsenal midfielder will wear the armband on his 50th appearance for the national team.

The England manager was left with a decision to make as captain Harry Kane is injured, as are vice captain pairing Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker.

What happened to Belgium's golden generation?

What happened to Belgium's golden generation?

Many looked at Belgium's line-up from the 0-0 draw against Ireland in Dublin on Saturday - which they were lucky to draw 0-0 after Brighton's Evan Ferguson's penalty was saved - and wondered: where has the golden generation gone?

Thibaut Courtois, who has previously fallen out with Tedesco about not being named captain, is out injured, Toby Alderweireld is out of the squad, with Jan Vertonghen now a backup at 36 years old.

Captain Kevin De Bruyne is out injured too, Yannick Carrasco is playing in Saudi Arabia, Michy Batshuayi in Turkey, Romelu Lukaku unwanted by Chelsea.

There are plenty of promising youngsters but the days of being top of the FIFA rankings are surely well behind them.

Is anyone unlucky to miss out for England?

Is anyone unlucky to miss out for England?

It depends on who you ask. Most fans of a Premier League team will tell you Player X's omission is a disgrace and a sign of Gareth Southgate's bias/lack of intelligence/unsuitability of the job (delete as appropriate).

But largely I think he's got this squad about right. He hasn't been helped by injuries and there are always differing opinions over who should or shouldn't be in the squad.

In midfield, West Ham duo Kalvin Phillips and James Ward-Prowse have struggled of late while Raheem Sterling's form for Chelsea has often flattered to deceive.

The one thing most England fans can agree on: Jordan Henderson's continued inclusion is baffling, considering the wealth of better options in (for example): Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Eberechi Eze, my five-year-old cousin, etc.

Any surprises in England's squad?

Any surprises in England's squad?

Good question. James Trafford's call-up (albeit replacing Johnstone) hints at a medium- to long-term succession plan in goal, with the likes of Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope not getting any younger.

In defence, Ezri Konsa (who also came on against Brazil), Jarrad Branthwaite and Lewis Dunk have a chance to prove themselves as defensive cover options amid injuries to Marc Guehi and Levi Colwill.

Joe Gomez offers excellent versatility, as does Rico Lewis, though this summer's Euros may come too soon for 19-year-old Lewis. The midfield is largely as expected, though it would have been nice for a younger and more able midfielder to replace the ageing Jordan Henderson.

While up top, Anthony Gordon's bright performance against Brazil did his chances of making the Euros squad no damage at all, with Ivan Toney battling with Ollie Watkins to be named as Harry Kane's deputy as a goalscoring No 9.

Drop-outs and call-ups

Drop-outs and call-ups

Since England's squad was named, there have been several changes made. In goal, Crystal Palace's Sam Johnstone has returned to his club, with Burnley's James Trafford promoted from the Under-21s.

Manchester City's Rico Lewis has also been moved up from the U21s after injuries to defenders Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire.

Manchester United midfield wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo was called up as cover and came on for his senior international debut as a substitute against Brazil (more on that later).

While in attack, Bukayo Saka dropped out of the squad and Harry Kane will not be fit to feature later.

Heavy rain forecast

There was light rain throughout the day ahead of the Brazil game, which didn't have too much effect on the action.

So far today, it has been pretty clear in the English capital but rain is expected all afternoon into the evening.

The pitch will likely be quite heavy and slippery. That might well affect both teams' hopes of nice, neat possession football.

If you're going tonight, take your brollies!
