LEWIS COUNTY – On Monday, April 8, NYS will be in the path of totality for the Great North American Eclipse. Those in the North Country will be in an especially good spot to view this amazing and rare natural phenomenon, which will begin passing over NYS at approximately 3:16 p.m.
Several solar eclipse events are taking place in Lewis County on April 8, including the following:
A “Totality on the Tug” from 1-5 p.m. at the Lewis County Fairgrounds on Bostwick Street. Organized by the Lowville Free Library, along with Naturally Lewis and the Lewis County Fair Board, the event will feature crafts, games, and food trucks like Tug Hill Artisan Roasters.
Not far from the fairgrounds, the First Presbyterian Church (FPC) of Lowville will have a worship service/eclipse watch starting at 1:30 p.m. The FPC will be partnering with Voice in the Wilderness for this event, and has purchased 100 eclipse glasses, which may be reserved by emailing voiceinthewilderness0@gmail.com. Hot dogs, drinks and chips will be served. Guests are asked to please bring a lawn chair. The exact location of the worship service/viewing event will be 3736 Rector Road, Lowville.
Tug Hill Estate on Yancey Road will also be having a special event from 12-5 p.m. in the Vintner’s Lounge. Eclipse-themed food and beverages will be served all day, and there will be giveaways, as well. There will be eclipse glasses available for the first 100 guests, but it is recommended that guests bring their own glasses and lawn chairs.
Outside of Lowville, Road’s End Orchards Farm Store & Winery in Constableville will also have an eclipse viewing event from 1-5 p.m. All are invited to come view the eclipse in the wide expanse of the orchard. Eclipse glasses will be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Boonville Environmental Conservation Council. Broadway Cafe & Bakery will be onsite with delicious baked goods, along with Funny Farm Acres with freeze dried candy. Live entertainment will be provided, as well. Road’s End Orchards is located at 5044 Crofoot Hill Road.
Tavern 230, located right next to Snow Ridge Ski Resort in Turin, will host a solar eclipse party from 12-5 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and include admission to the party, a chair lift to the top of one of the slopes, and a free pair of eclipse glasses to the first 100 pre-sale tickets sold. Festivities in the tavern begin at noon. The chair lift will run from 2-4 p.m. Guests must walk back down the slopes. Tickets are limited for this event. Camping is also available by reservation at nick@snowridge.com.
The 3 Willows Event Center in Lyons Falls will be having an Eclipse viewing event from 1-5 p.m. There will be free eclipse viewing glasses, and the event will include indoor and outdoor activities for all ages, as well as live-streaming NASA coverage. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. Hope you can join the library and students from South Lewis. If you can’t attend, call the library before April 8 for free glasses.
It is important to remember that solar viewing glasses are necessary for safely viewing a total eclipse. Viewing an eclipse through binoculars, cameras or telescopes without special solar filters will cause severe eye injury. A limited supply of eclipse glasses will be available at William H. Bush Memorial Library in Martinsburg starting Monday, April 1.
