CENTRAL PARK, Manhattan (PIX11) – The Great Lawn in Central Park will reopen this Saturday, and it’s already scheduled to host the Global Citizen Festival in September.

The Great Lawn was closed earlier than usual last year after it was damaged during the festival, which was held despite intense rain from Tropical Storm Ophelia. New York City Councilwoman Gale Brewer wrote in a letter to Mayor Eric Adams that “heavy rain, foot traffic, and machinery used for staging destroyed” the grass.

A third of the lawn was ruined and needed to be reseeded, according to the Central Park Conservancy.

The festival’s board of directors paid for all the repairs. This year’s Global Citizen Festival will be held on Sept. 28.

The lineup of performers is expected to be announced in the coming months.
