Colorado treasurer removes drop box after attempted break-in

The Jefferson County Treasurer's Office said someone tried drilling through a lock on the box Tuesday.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Someone tried to break into a drop box outside of the Jefferson County Administration building Tuesday.

The drop box was used for people to drop off property tax payments that the Jefferson County Treasurer's Office would collect.

Treasurer Jerry DiTullio said the attempted break-in compelled his office to remove the box to protect taxpayers' funds and payment information.

“The perpetrators tried to drill out the lock twice in one night. I have decided that the risk to taxpayers associated with any potential theft of tax payments and fraud against taxpayers is too significant to ignore,” said DiTullio.

The Treasurer's Office said another drop box, located inside the atrium of the county administration building, is still available during regular business hours which are Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
