BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) - A truck driver is dead after police say he was shot by a St. Joseph Township police officer during a “violent altercation” in Fair Plain on Monday night.

Michigan State Police say that St. Joseph Township Police Department officers responded to a welfare check involving a semi-truck driver in the Carronde Park area near Riverbend Drive.

When police found the semi-truck, the driver proceeded to crash into a cop car before driving a short distance and crashing into a house. The driver then exited the vehicle and ran away. That’s when police say officers chased the man, resulting in a “violent altercation,” which led to an officer shooting him.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Police have not named the suspect, but they say he was a 42-year-old man from Tennessee.

The officer involved in the shooting suffered minor injuries and has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Michigan State Police said a full report with lab analysis, autopsy and toxicology results, and other evidence will be sent to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review when their investigation is complete.
