WICKER PARK — The building at 1415 N. Ashland Ave. in Wicker Park has a history as a place for creatives in Chicago. Once the popular hip-hop store The Basement, it has housed other businesses since the store closed in 2013, including a speakeasy-style art gallery and hair salon.
Now, Celia Chavez is ready to bring a new hub for entrepreneurs and creatives to the building.
Chavez’s Studio 424, a members-only social club, will have a recording studio, a photography studio and a podcast room, as well as meeting rooms and spaces for events and pop-up shops.
“We’re seeking to be the space for any and all creatives that are interested in being a part of a community, to come together and have a space where they feel is home for them,” Chavez, co-founder and general manager of Studio 424, said. “Where you’re part of a community and you gain inspiration from those around you, that then helps shape and mold your creativity and your vision.”
The grand opening of Studio 424 is 5-10 p.m. Friday. Visitors will be able to tour the clubhouse and shop different vendors while listening to music from DJ King Inesse and DJ Boy Jeanius and watching graffiti artist Zeb work live.
Studio 424 also offers lodging for its members — and the public. Chavez has taken over the management of the building and saw an opportunity to upgrade the upstairs apartments, while also getting involved in the short-term lodging business, she said.
Anyone can book a stay at Studio 424, but club members get a discount on rooms. Accommodations include bedrooms that can sleep 1-2 people, as well as bunk-bed options. Shared amenities include a bathroom, kitchen, living room space and a rooftop deck.
“Our lodging is not just a place to crash. It’s a friendly spot for business travelers and digital nomads looking for a seamless mix of stay and work, all in one place,” the Studio 424 website said.
Rates for membership at Studio 424 start at $99 a month. The introductory plan includes unlimited access to the clubhouse 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 20 percent off at neighboring restaurant Caspian Kabob and free attendance to all in-house programs and events, among other amenities.
“I want people to come ready to engage and be ready to bring ideas and be open to connecting with one another … It’s about getting to know each other’s craft or whatever dreams you may have,” Chavez said. “That’s how we get from the dreaming to the doing phase.”
