Last year, a triumphant Cannes Film Festival gave us best picture nominees Anatomy Of A Fall and Zone Of Interest, and—perhaps more importantly—best boy and Palm Dog winner, Messi the Border Collie. But while that immaculate showing will be pretty tough to beat, this year’s festival is already putting in a great bid.
The festival announced its official, 77th edition lineup today, and there are some major directors coming to play. As expected, Yorgos Lanthimos will premiere his latest Emma Stone collaboration, Kinds Of Kindness (which just dropped a new teaser today), and Francis Ford Coppola will be bringing his 40-years in the making, self-funded behemoth Megalopolis. Those films will be joined by Paul Schrader’s Oh Canada, starring Richard Gere and a flanneled and mustached Jacob Elordi, and Ali Abbasi’s sure-to-be divisive Trump biopic, The Apprentice, featuring a prosthetic-coated Sebastian Stan as the orange man himself.
Other films in competition to look out for include musical dramedy Emilia Perez from director Jacques Audiard, which stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, and Paolo Sorrentino’s Gary Oldman-led Parthenope. For fans of body horror, there are two potentially thrilling selections: David Cronenberg will be bringing his “most personal film,” The Shrouds, and Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are set to head up The Substance, from director Coralie Fargeat.
But while this year’s race for the Palme d’Or is already shaping up to be a real event, these aren’t the only buzzy premieres to look forward to. Out of competition, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will also have its world premiere at the festival, along with Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga (seems like “saga” might be the new word of the year), Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson, and Guy Maddin’s Rumours, starring Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander, The Surfer, starring Nicolas Cage, and The Balconettes, a feature from Portrait Of A Lady On Fire and TÁR star Noémie Merlant. While not premiering anything, George Lucas will also be present to receive an honorary Palme d’Or.
