CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) -The Carter County Republican Party welcomed the community to its “Crisis at the Border” event at the Carter County Courthouse on Thursday.

Mayor Patty Woodby and Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy recounted their recent trip with Sen. Bill Hagerty to the U.S. southern border.

“It was an eye-opening experience for me, and heart-breaking all at the same time,” Mayor Woodby said. “While here in Carter County we are a long way away from the southern border, the things happening there still impact us as a community. Please continue to pray for our military and our law enforcement as they continue to keep us safe here at home and in all the border states.”

Mayor Woodby wants the community to be aware of what is happening near the border.

“We wanted to make you aware that these issues are happening, that they are here…the crime, the health care, the illegal immigration, everything. It affects everything from our jobs, our jails, our health departments, and all of these entities that we as taxpayers pay for these illegal immigrants are going to affect that bottom line.”

The group visited Eagle Pass in the Del Rio sector, an area heavily featured in media coverage. They spoke with local law enforcement, members of the Texas Highway Patrol, and property owners.

“Our residents are concerned with how the border crisis is affecting us and our community,” said Carter County Republican Party Chairwoman Abby Morris-Frye. “We thought this would be a good opportunity to allow the community to hear from these local leaders about the things they witnessed and the impacts we are feeling locally as a result of the crisis going on at the southern border.”

Sen. Marsha Blackburn also recently visited Eagle Pass.
