CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A 40-year-old man has been identified as the person killed following an altercation with police last Saturday.

Cedar Rapids Police responded to an incident in the 200 block of 31st Street NE on April 6th after responding to a 911 call. Officials then received a second 911 call requesting officers perform a welfare check on the first caller, who was reportedly armed and making suicidal and homicidal statements.

Responders conducted a high-risk approach with the first caller who did have a weapon. When officers gave verbal commands for the now suspect to drop his weapon, the suspect raised his weapon. Three of the officers fired at the suspect who fell to the ground after being hit.

Emergency crews responded to the incident and the suspect died at the scene. The second caller was hit by gunfire as well. The second caller was taken to the hospital due to multiple gunshot wounds. No police officers were injured during the shooting.

Officials have now identified the man killed as David Vanderhamm of Cedar Rapids. Officials say they will not be releasing the identity of the second caller at this time.

The involved CRPD officers are remaining on critical incident leave pending the completion of the investigation.
