A motorcyclist who was reported for dangerous driving and speeding last week has been convicted and ordered to pay a fine of $500.

Teava George appeared before Justice of Peace Vannia Kenning at the Criminal Court in Avarua on Thursday where he admitted to the charges.

On March 27th, he drove a green motorcycle at Nikao at a speed dangerous to himself and the public, the court heard.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Tuaine Manavaroa said that George disregarded the risk to himself and others as he overtook a vehicle near the Runaway Café in Nikao.

He was photographed, and the image circulated on social media. The motorcycle’s owner recognised the bike and reported George to the police.

On March 28th, George drove another motorcycle at Tutakimoa in a manner that endangered the public.

Senior sergeant Manavaroa noted that this occurred around the time Catholic Church service ended, and George drove dangerously in front of the church as pedestrians were crossing.

Manavaroa said that George admitted to driving on both occasions.

He also stated that George was unemployed, resided in Matavera, and recommended a monetary fine.

While this was not George’s first court appearance, it was his first conviction.

JP Kenning asked George how he would pay the fine if he was unemployed.

George replied that he was not sure.

She ordered him to pay a fine of $200 on each charge plus $50 court cost for each charge.
