Darius Garland Joins LeBron James, Kyrie Irving In Cavaliers Record Book

Darius Garland is the third member of the Cleveland Cavaliers to record 2,000 assists and 5,000 at age 24 or younger.

The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted Darius Garland with the 5th pick in the 2019 Draft hoping that he would be their next franchise point guard leading them into the next era of Wine and Gold basketball. That’s exactly what has happened and now DG cements his name in franchise history alongside two legends.

Garland finished with 14 points and 12 assists in Cleveland’s 117-114 over the Philadelphia 76ers which is significant when looking at the team’s record books. DG is now one of just three Cavaliers to record 2,000 assists and 5,000 points in franchise history at the age of 24 or younger, via CavsNotes on X.

The other two are LeBron James and Kyrie Irving

This game also extends a streak confirming that Garland is returning to form just in time for the postseason. DG has now recorded three straight games with 10 or more assists. This is the first time he’s done this since March of the 2022 season.

There’s no denying that Garland has struggled to score the ball this season for a variety of reasons. Now that the team has Donovan Mitchell back, Garland won’t feel as much pressure of being the number one option every time he’s on the floor.

Being a facilitator and playmaker is where DG thrives as he’s 18.5 points and 6.7 assists through the first five seasons of his career. Garland and the Cavaliers organization agreed on a rookie contract extension that will keep him in Cleveland through the 2027-28 season meaning he will have plenty of opportunities to make plenty of more Cavaliers history.
