Discount retail chain 99 Cents Only is closing all 371 of its stores across the United States — including four locations in the Modesto area.

99 Cents Only Stores LLC entered an agreement with Hilco Global to liquidate all merchandise and dispose of store fixtures, furnishings and equipment, the company announced Thursday, while Hilco Real Estate will manage the sale of its real estate assets.

Sales were expected to begin Friday at all store locations.

“This was an extremely difficult decision and is not the outcome we expected or hoped to achieve,” interim chief executive officer Mike Simoncic said in a news release. “Unfortunately, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, including the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting consumer demand, rising levels of shrink, persistent inflationary pressures and other macroeconomic headwinds, all of which have greatly hindered the company’s ability to operate.

The company “engaged in an extensive analysis of all available and credible alternatives to identify a solution that would allow the business to continue,” the release said. “The company ultimately determined that an orderly wind-down was necessary and the best way to maximize the value of 99 Cents Only Stores’ assets.”

Founded in 1982, 99 Cents Only carries “a broad assortment of name brand and other attractively priced merchandise and compelling seasonal product offerings,” the release said.

The Commerce City-based company has store locations in Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas.
