The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

 Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

  

Smoking at school

March 22

7:30 a.m. A deputy stopped to speak with a man who was yelling and interfering with his traffic stop.

8:22 a.m. A caller said female employees at Walgreens are threatening her and her boyfriend, saying the are suspicious and homeless because they are riding bikes and refused to allow them in the store. The caller said she just wants to buy hair dye.

9:24 p.m. A caller reported a man beat her daughter and they are headed to the emergency room.

9:38 a.m. A student was in possession of a THC vape pen at the Española Middle School.

10:15 a.m. A Walgreens caller said his car was vandalized last night and keyed.

10:58 a.m. A County Road 87 in Chimayó caller reported someone broke in and took an electric heater.

11:47 a.m. A Walgreens caller reported a man took trash bags and cleaning supplies from the store. The man told the caller that the mayor let everyone at the homeless encampment near Valdez Bridge know that they can walk into any store and take cleaning supplies. 

12:16 p.m. A 76-year-old man on Keith Street was unconscious and not breathing. The Office of the Medical Investigator was called.

12:18 p.m. A Velarde caller said he owns an orchard and last night, 200 yards of irrigation pipe were broken and set on fire.

12:58 p.m. A Walnut Trail caller reported his son is on drugs and threatening him.

5:09 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a child in Chamita who had burns or bruises across his neck and didn’t go to school today.

8:15 p.m. A caller reported a fight between a woman and two men is happening behind Liberty Tax.

8:27 p.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller said someone hit her in the face.

9:05 p.m. A Walgreens caller reported a man is outside the front doors and looks like he might throw up or could be drunk. Medics who responded said the man was on the ground spasming or twitching.

 

Drugged out at the Dollar General

March 23

9:38 p.m. A woman at the Española Hospital is walking around the parking lot with her dad and said he cut his hand and won’t get into the car.

10:57 a.m. A Calle Senaida caller reported a man knocked a woman out with a box.

11:07 a.m. An Ohkay Eagle Mart caller said he was gassing up his vehicle when someone pulled a handgun on him.

11:43 a.m. A Barbee Street and North Coronado Avenue caller reported a man who’s supposed to be on an ankle monitor is roaming the streets.

11:43 a.m. An Akin Lane caller claims to have been battered by two bartenders.

12:39 p.m. A Dollar General in Española caller wants to file a report because someone was harassing employees and other people.

3:54 p.m. A caller from Taos reported her card was skimmed and used at Lowe’s Home Improvement.

4:21 p.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller said a woman is in the bathroom and refusing to leave.

6:02 p.m. A Walmart caller reported a woman is in the apparel area, switching tags on merchandise.

6:13 p.m. A Calle del Rio caller said a man was hit with a bat and requested an ambulance.

7:25 p.m. A call from State Road 76 in Española went to the 911 Center on which a woman was yelling and swearing. She was telling someone not to follow her and threatened to kick someone, calling them a dumb tramp.

8:46 p.m. A Dollar General in Alcalde caller reported a woman was drugged out and got aggressive with the cashier.

 

Coming to get him

March 24

12:31 a.m. A man drove by the entrance of the Ohkay Casino and told a security guard that he was getting chased.

12:47 a.m. A County Road 135 in Hernandez caller said someone has been threatening him on the phone and saying they are going to come and get him.

2:33 a.m. A man in Medanales is being belligerent and having hallucinations.

4 a.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller reported a vehicle started honking at her and when she left someone in the vehicle fired a .40-caliber handgun at her vehicle, twice.

9:22 a.m. A caller wants to file a report for an assault that happened at the trailer park off Calle del Rio.

 2:21 p.m. A Private Drive 1601 in Hernandez caller reported a child is harassing everyone on the road.

3:03 p.m. A Walmart caller reported two people are bagging items and not scanning them.

3:41 p.m. A South Prince Drive caller said she went to check on her son and can see him on the floor. She can’t get into the house.

4:25 p.m. An Ink Repute caller reported someone is setting up a tent behind the building.

5 p.m. A caller said a man and woman are running in and out of traffic near the old Italian Fusion.

5:54 p.m. A Calle del Sol caller reported the neighbors are yelling and fighting with each other and she saw a weapon.

7:48 p.m. A Freddy’s caller said someone in a vehicle is shooting paintballs at cars.

8:45 p.m. A Calle del Rio caller reported that it smells like fentanyl near the neighbor’s house. He got very belligerent with the dispatcher and said he will handle the issue himself.

8:54 p.m. An Española Hospital caller said a person on a involuntary psychiatric hold left the building wearing scrubs and no shirt.

9:26 p.m. A 420 Emporia caller reported a man in all black is rolling around near the trash bins and refusing to leave.

9:35 p.m. An officer said he got into a fight with a man at the Giant gas station on North Paseo de Oñate.

10:39 p.m. A Calle del Rio caller said loud noise is shaking his house. He requested to speak with an officer, then said he would shoot the officer. The dispatcher asked him to confirm the threat he made and he said he will shoot everybody.

11:40 p.m. An Española Pathways Shelter caller reported a 60-year-old man is in and out of consciousness and overdosing.

 

Yelling at himself

March 25

1:22 a.m. A Private Drive 1517 in Hernandez caller said someone has been pointing lasers through his window and he wants to file a report.

8:16 a.m. A Private Drive 1518 in Hernandez caller reported someone is threatening to hurt him. He called back and said that person has people held hostage in the house. He began cussing and claimed to have a photo of a woman with a gun to her head. He then hung up on the dispatcher after calling them names.

9:22 a.m. A Lower San Pedro Road caller said someone stole a catalytic converter off a work truck.

11:33 a.m. A caller sees her stolen vehicle traveling near Española Valley High School. She said she will meet with a deputy at the intersection of Simmons Lane McCurdy Road.

12:07 p.m. A Lopez Lane caller said a truck that dumps gravel down her arroyo is damaging it and she wants to speak with a deputy.

12:26 p.m. An Española Valley High School caller reported an ROTC student took one of the rifles they practice with and was showing it off to other students in the cafeteria.

2:36 p.m. A caller said there was a man at the homeless encampment that’s threatening other people.

3:36 p.m. An Adult Probation Office caller reported an offender came in very drunk.

5:53 p.m. A Speedway caller said a drunk man is yelling at himself and the customers are complaining.

6:03 p.m. A Subway caller reported a drunk man is yelling at people and threatening them.

6:34 p.m. A Dollar General caller said two men in tents stole over $3,000 in electricity.

9:25 p.m. A caller heard about three shots fired near the Crisis Center of Northern New Mexico.

9:49 p.m. A 14-year-old went to the San Pedro Sonic and told an employee his father beat him.

 

Frito bandito

March 26

12:19 a.m. A Harbor Freight caller said there’s damage to the front door.

2:18 a.m. An Ohkay Eagle Mart caller said someone is tapping on the window, trying to get their attention.

7:10 a.m. A caller reported a Frito Lay truck was broken into at their warehouse at Española Transit.

8:29 a.m. A head-on collision was reported in Ojo Caliente. All parties involved were conscious, breathing and walking around.

1:28 p.m. A Dollar General in Española caller said there’s a tent on the property and they want the people in it to be dispersed.

3:51 p.m. A Calle Lucero caller said their house was broken into and power tools were taken.

4 p.m. A report was taken at EPD for an assault.

4:37 p.m. An Allsups caller reported a woman is yelling at employees and causing a scene.

4:38 p.m. A Center Market caller said a woman is bothering customers in the parking lot.

5:59 p.m. An Ojo Caliente caller reported her neighbor physically assaulted his girlfriend.

6:08 p.m. An Allsups caller said someone in a vehicle is possibly smoking drugs.

7:13 p.m. A 29-year-old woman on County Road 86 in Chimayó was unconscious.

9:06 p.m. A 62-year-old woman on County Road 144 in Alcalde was reported to be gasping. She was then reported to be unconscious. CPR was performed but the woman died.

 

Stop revving the engine

March 27

6:39 a.m. A facilities building at Northern New Mexico College was broken into and tools were taken. 

11:26 a.m. A McDonald’s caller asked five homeless people behind the dumpster to leave and they got aggressive with her.

12:39 p.m. A caller who is working in Iowa but lives in Texas reported a woman from Gallina on Facebook messenger is threatening to kill him. He wants to speak with a deputy. The responding deputy noted that the screenshots were from 2018 and the Gallina woman sent them to the man’s wife yesterday.

1 p.m. A Simmons Lane caller reported a man and woman are harassing him and tried to run him off the road.

1:11 p.m. The Simmons Lane caller phoned again to say the man and woman are harassing him and tried to run him off the road.

2:01 p.m. A report for fraud at Family Dollar was taken at EPD.

2:05 p.m. A Goodwill caller reported three or four men are in a car and smoking from a foil.

2:14 p.m. A Darrin’s Place caller said a client that’s being discharged has a warrant for his arrest and they are requesting an officer to serve him.

2:44 p.m. A caller reported an Española Public Schools van is following her and the person inside is recording her. She said they followed her from a restaurant and they are near North Riverside Drive and Fairview Lane. 

2:51 p.m. A Calle del Rancho caller said she and her child’s father got into a physical altercation and he took three XBoxes and a Nintendo Switch.

3:07 p.m. A vehicle hit a Del Norte Credit Union customer’s vehicle then fled.

3:30 p.m. A Center Market caller reported a man is swinging around a PVC pipe. He was asked to leave but refuses.

4:46 p.m. An El Llano Road caller said her granddaughter is slamming the doors and throwing thing at her.

5:02 p.m. A Chamita caller reported there’s a person at the house with whom her uncle got into a fight. She said her uncle hurt his fingers during the fight.

5:12 p.m. A Vallecitos caller said a man is out “there” roaming and breaking into houses. She doesn’t want to be next, so she wants a deputy to check on her house.

6:07 p.m. A caller reported a man who is near the Ohkay Express Mart was drunk earlier today at church and got kicked out. 

7:43 p.m. A caller said a truck T-boned an SUV near Rivera’s funeral home. Those involved don’t appear to be injured and are out of the vehicles.

7:56 p.m. A man was detained at Hernandez Elementary. His vehicle was sealed and a deputy requested a search warrant.

8 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported a car hit the railing near Lio’s and spun out into the median.

8:44 p.m. A Vista del Rio Apartments caller said a vehicle across the street is revving its engine and they want an officer to ask the person to stop.

8:58 p.m. A Medanales caller reported hitting an elk.

9:19 p.m. A Calle Redonda caller said that if officers don’t respond to the previous call about a vehicle revving its engine at the Vista del Rio Apartments, he will go out with his gun and shoot the person.

9:27 p.m. An officer went to the Vista del Rio Apartments and told the man revving his engine to turn it off for the night.

9:34 p.m. A caller said her purse was stolen while she was working at Pizza Hut. She went to the Santa Claran because her credit card was used there, but security told her they can’t pull surveillance footage without a police report.

9:53 p.m. A North Riverside Drive caller said three people were on the side of the building, smoking something.

10:13 p.m. The E-911 Center received a call regarding a person in the Rio Arriba County Detention Center that has drug paraphernalia.

11:33 p.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller reported hearing two gunshots in the parking lot and said a fight might be in progress.

 

Throwing rocks at cars

March 28

1:42 a.m. A caller heard seven shots near Romero’s Fruit Stand.

6:09 a.m. A woman and two men were standing by the ice machine at Speedway and were asked twice, to leave, but refused.

6:31 a.m. A Chamita caller reported someone threw her mom into a door.

6:52 a.m. A caller said there’s smoke coming out of the covers in the road near McDonald’s. A second caller also reported seeing smoke coming from the ditch area but didn’t see flames. A third caller said the smoke was coming from the field behind McDonald’s. Firefighters reported that smoke was coming out of the storm drain and there was a brush fire in the culvert that they extinguished.

7:06 a.m. A Waste Water Plant caller said someone broke into one of the storage units and tore the door up. They also took something but left it by the gate.

8:56 a.m. A Pinch Penny Washomat caller reported being hit by a vehicle that fled.

9 a.m. An Alcalde caller said a 69-year-old man is withdrawing from fentanyl and can’t move.

10:27 a.m. A caller reported her 62-year-old brother hasn’t been feeling well and she hasn’t seen or spoken to him since Tuesday. He’s not answering the door either. Deputies got into the man’s house and found him dead.

11:22 a.m. A caller wants to file a report for a package that was never delivered.

2:05 p.m. A log splitter was stolen from Lowe’s Home Improvement.

3:17 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man who’s behind the building, sitting slouched down. She tried to talk to him but he isn’t responding.

3:23 p.m. A Murphy’s Express caller said three people in a car are blocking her car in and threatening to assault her and break her windows.

3:40 p.m. A Lopez Lane caller reported someone in a pickup truck is dumping concrete in the arroyo by their house.

4:35 p.m. An Española Hospital caller said a man is in the emergency room lobby and is refusing to leave. An officer gave him a ride to CVS.

5:06 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man lying on the ground at CVS. It was discovered the man was the same one who was just dropped off there by an officer. The man said he can’t feel his legs so he was transported to the hospital.

5:43 p.m. An Española Hospital caller said a man is trespassing and they want him removed.

6:23 p.m. A caller reported he lost his phone at the Ohkay Casino, but when he went back to check and see if it’s there, they said they didn’t have it. He was able to track the phone to a house on Kennedy Loop last night.

6:47 p.m. A caller said her boyfriend left her at the methadone clinic and when she got home, he wouldn’t let her in the house.

7:25 p.m. A deputy was flagged down in Hernandez regarding a reckless driver.

7:39 p.m. An Alcalde caller reported a 69-year-old man is suffering from withdrawals.

7:39 p.m. A caller said a man damaged her phone when he tried to take their son. He’s headed toward Petaca.

7:42 p.m. A caller reported a woman in a 4-Runner made a U-turn near Del Norte Credit Union after arguing with a man at Speedway. When she made the turn, a bunch of beer cans fell out of the vehicle.

7:56 p.m. A Walmart caller said the man who washes windows in the parking lot has been banned.

8:11 p.m. A CVS caller reported a man in truck harassed her by saying he hated “crackers” and cursed at her when they were at the gas station.  

9:06 p.m. A man fled from a traffic stop that began on U.S. 84/285. Two people were detained near Hacienda Home Center.

9:12 p.m. A caller said a man is chasing him and trying to kill him. The caller said he’s at the stoplight by Speedway. He called back and began screaming that the man tried to kill him and he’s going to die for nothing. Officers were unable to find the caller.

9:22 p.m. A Food King caller reported teens are throwing thing at cars and pointing lasers at them.

9:16 p.m. A State Road 76 in Española caller said there’s a drunk man outside his house.
