JP Pegues officially inks with Auburn, Bruce Pearl breaks down signing of Furman transfer

Bruce Pearl and the Auburn Tigers wasted no time in officially securing Furman transfer point guard JP Pegues.

Pegues committed to Auburn on Friday at 11 a.m. and had put pen to paper hours later as Auburn officially announced his addition minutes after 9 p.m.

Pegues’ transfer to Auburn comes after three seasons at Furman, where he averaged 18.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game during his junior campaign last season.

During the 2023-24 season, the 6-foot-2 Nashville native shot 42 percent from the field and 36 percent from the 3-point line. Pegues logged a season-high 35 points at Western Carolina in one of 15 where he tallied 20-plus points with the Paladins last season.

“JP is a winner,” Pearl said. “He is a scoring point guard that has great ability to shoot the basketball. He can score at all three levels, defend and lead. Talking to several great coaches in the SoCon, they unanimously believed he was the best player in their league this season.”

Pegues was named to the all-SoCon first team this past year. The year prior, Pegues was named the Most Outstanding Player of the SoCon men’s basketball championship after he helped Furman to its first league title since 1980.

The addition of Pegues comes after both of Auburn’s starting point guards from the 2023-24 season — Aden Holloway and Tre Donaldson — announced their intentions to enter the transfer portal.

“We have demonstrated a great ability to get into the high levels of mid-major basketball and the transition to Auburn has been great for those who have transferred to our program including Johni Broome, Wendell Green Jr., Denver Jones and Zep Jasper,” Pearl said. “Associate head coach Steven Pearl and the staff did an outstanding job of evaluating talent in the transfer portal. This is a great first step in rebuilding our roster.”
