Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler says a Blacksburg youth was killed in a single vehicle collision Friday night.  Fowler identified the victim as William Bailey James Smith, 16, of 509 Indian Springs Road.
“Smith was driver and lone occupant of a 1993 Chevrolet pick up truck that was traveling east on McGill Highway about 10:45 p.m.,” Fowler said. “The vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway after which Smith over corrected, ran off the left side and struck a tree on the passenger side of the truck cab. Smith was transported from the scene by ambulance to Cherokee Medical Center where he died in the emergency department at 12:52 a.m. Saturday.”
Fowler said speed was a contributing factor to the collision. An autopsy will be performed Monday as part of the coroner’s investigation.
