Former Baltimore Orioles Top Prospect Gets His Revenge With Monster Day
Some revenge was handed out to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday after one of their former top prospects had a monster day to hand his old team a loss.
The Baltimore Orioles returned home after sweeping their division opponent Boston Red Sox on Thursday night and had to immediately shift their attention to the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
What makes this matchup interesting is these two franchises did a deal this offseason that sent Corbin Burnes to the Orioles in exchange for two top prospects.
On Friday, one of those prospects got some revenge as Joey Ortiz was a huge part of the Brewers winning the first game of this series 11-1.
He went 3-5 with a triple and two runs driven in.
Ortiz was ranked as Baltimore's No. 8 overall prospect in 2023, getting 15 games from late-April to the end of June at the Major League level before getting sent down to Triple-A following his 7-33 performance.
The third baseman talked during the offseason about wanting to be with the franchise who drafted him before he was ultimately getting dealt in the trade that brought back Burnes.
So far, Ortiz has flourished in Milwaukee.
He has a slash line of .360/.448/.480 with two extra-base hits and three RBI across 11 games.
While it certainly stings to see former players do damage when they return, the Orioles ultimately made the right decision to send him away based on the type of player they got back and how much of a logjam there currently is in their infield.
Baltimore will see one of their other prospects who was shipped out in the same deal, DL Hall, on Saturday as he's scheduled to be the opposing starting pitcher.
The Orioles will try to get back on track and set up a rubber match for Sunday.
