OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY) - The Oshkosh Area School District school board is expected to vote on some key issues Wednesday night.

Board members will vote on personnel and retirement changes, approval of a new banking partner, and the sale of the Washington Elementary School building.

Board members will vote on each item with one vote and without discussion.

New banking partner

Some board members are upset over how the district’s newly hired assistant superintendent was treated by Associated Bank while attempting to cash his very first paycheck. As we’ve previously reported, the district’s newly hired assistant superintendent, Sam Coleman, who is Black, was turned away by an Associated Bank branch when he went to cash his paycheck last July, at the same bank the check is drawn on. The teller didn’t ask for ID or verify the check with the school district.

Coleman believes his race was a factor. He recorded a conversation with Associated Bank officials admitting they violated their own policy. The school district’s account is valued at $100 million.

Washington Elementary

The school district began accepting offers for Washington Elementary School last year, amid construction of Menominee Elementary School, which was approved by voters in a 2020 referendum.

Students from Washington, Merrill, and Webster Stanley elementary schools will attend Menominee Elementary when it opens next fall.
