UTICA — Dennis Dewey, volunteer filmmaker and videographer, presents his new film “Farmin’ It” about dairy farming in Oneida County at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 at the Oneida County History Center, 1608 Genesee St.
Dewey said the 50-minute film was five months in the making. The informative and entertaining documentary takes the audience to a “Goldilocks series” of county dairy farms — a small farm in Boonville to a medium-sized farm in Holland Patent to a large farming operation in New Hartford — to bring them up close and personal with the cows, farmers and, yes, even the robots that work to provide their milk products.
Along the way, they will learn about the very first cow to come to the area in 1784, the humanitarian veterinarian who saved hundreds of babies’ lives in Utica as the city’s “chief milk inspector” and just how much manure is produced annually in this county. The film also reveals how an astounding and ever-increasing amount of milk — the county is the third biggest producer in the state — is generated from an ever-dwindling number of farms, even as dairy becomes more eco-friendly.
The audience will come away from this film not only well-informed but grateful every time they butter their bread or take a lick of an ice cream cone.
