The sand and surf gave Fort Myers Beach fans an extra treat Monday during a partial solar eclipse that spanned across the country.
Spread out along the Gulf of Mexico, sunbathers glanced skyward just before 3 p.m. to catch a view of the moon blocking the sun.
While Southwest Florida was not in the 115-mile-wide path of totality, a partial eclipse was visible in Fort Myers Beach — and it was pretty darned cool. With temperatures reaching 78 degrees and little cloud cover, the beach-goers saw the moon provide 52% coverage of the sun.
The 115-mile swath of "totality" stretched from Texas to Maine.
