Describing past Congress-led government as “weak and unstable” which failed to check terror, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Thursday that “Modi’s strong government” was “killing terrorists after entering their homes (aatankwadiyon ko ghar mei ghus kar mara jata hai)”.

He also said that because of his strong government, the Tiranga (Tricolour) was now a guarantee of safety even in war zones.

Addressing a BJP rally in Rishikesh in Uttarakhand which will vote in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 19, Modi attacked the Congress saying the “Delhi royal family” – he was referring to the Gandhi family – comes first for leaders of the party, followed by their own families. “This is the Congress tradition. But for Modi, you and all of India are my family,” he told the crowd.

“Whenever we had a weak and unstable government in the country, our enemies capitalised on it. Whenever we had a weak and unstable government, terrorism spread. Today, we have Modi’s strong government in India, and that is why ‘aatankwadiyon ko ghar mei ghus kar mara jata hai’. Today we have a strong government. India’s Tiragna has become the guarantee of safety even in war zones,” he said.

The Prime Minister’s “ghar mei ghus kar mara” remark follows similar remarks made in public earlier by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

With many from Uttarakhand in the Army – the Garhwal Rifles and Kumaon Regiment are infantry regiments – Modi brought up the ‘One Rank One Pension’ matter, saying it would never have been implemented had the Congress government been in power.

“Modi gave that guarantee and fulfilled it. It was Congress that said we would give Rs 500 crore to ex-Army personnel, but it was Modi who gave them Rs 1 lakh crore under the OROP. This includes Rs 3,500 crore to Uttarakhand Army families… During Congress rule, jawans did not have enough bulletproof jackets… the BJP provided our soldiers with Indian-made bulletproof jackets… The weak Congress government could not build modern infrastructure on the borders. Today, we have modern roads and tunnels along our borders,” he said, underlining that modern rifles, fighter jets and aircraft carriers were now indigenous.

He accused the Congress of opposing development and heritage, and of raising questions on the existence of Lord Ram.

“It is Congress which first opposed the Ram Mandir (in Ayodhya) and created obstacles in court. The builders of Ram temple forgave their sin and went to their homes to invite them (for the idol consecration ceremony). I do not know what their thinking is, but they rejected that too. The Congress has also taken oath and made a public announcement that they will destroy Shakti in the Hindu dharma. The Congress wants to end the power of Maa Dhari Devi, Maa Chandrabadni, Maa Jwalpa Devi. These Congress statements will add fuel to the conspiracy to destroy Uttarakhand’s faith,” he said.
