The trailer of “O Pioneer,” a documentary film that follows the lives of three West Virginians during the COVID-19 pandemic, is up for a Webby People’s Choice Award.
The film had its world premiere at Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival in San Jose, California, last August where it took home the audience award for Best Documentary Feature. It also received the jury-nominated Sylvia Award for Best Documentary at the Rome International Film Festival and the Jack Spadaro Documentary Award from the Appalachian Studies Association.
“West Virginia inspires me, and I think this nomination proves it generates art that competes with the best on the planet. I hope folks will support independent film with their tender votes,” co-director Clara Lehmann said in a press release.
The film follows three West Virginians — a blacksmith, a seamstress and a hospital chaplain — navigating hardships and gives the viewer cause to redefine what they think an American pioneer is.
“This Webby nomination reminds me that story is king and we all, despite any disadvantages we may face, can inspire. This may be an underdog story, but today we feel hopeful,” Jonathan Lacocque, co-director in a press release.
