ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Downtown Roanoke will open a new theatre, staging its first season in July.

The theatre name, Exit, Pursued by a Bear, is inspired by the most famous stage direction by William Shakespeare. The theatre will begin with Crimes of the Heart on July 19-28 at Community High School.

Upcoming shows include Arsenic and Old Lace in October and two more plays in the first half of 2025.

One of the plays in 2025 will be new, providing more opportunities for local community theatre actors, directors, playwrights, stage managers, costumers, and anyone interested in theatre.

The theatre will also stage other classic works, hosting one classic show every season.

“Bringing community theatre to the heart of Roanoke is going to provide more opportunities for performers, as well as provide quality entertainment to our neighborhood here. There is so much talent in this city, and we hope to foster that by celebrating performances both at Bear and at other nearby venues,” says Angela McNeil, theatre president.
