Non-profits like Camillus House, Women Voice Network, change lives

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

South Florida is fortunate to have non-profit groups providing critical programs and raising funds to deliver services and create awareness for important issues. The CEO of Camillus House, Hilda Fernandez, who was a recent guest on my Gloria’s Gab LIVE show, leads a team of people providing resources for the homeless, like a free meal and shower with fresh clothes every day, counseling, an address to get mail and so much more. Camillus House helps with housing, both temporary and permanent (that is subsidized), job training, counseling, and has a place where clients can use computers to connect. As a result of their amazing outreach, they receive huge support for two annual fundraisers, the next of which is the 14th Annual Auction “Cork & Uncork” to be held at the Loews in Coral Gables on April 27. This promises to be another over-the-top affair that will feature renowned Chef Michelle Bernstein as well as humorist and author Dave Barry, who always brings laughs. Another non-profit of merit is the Women Voice Network, founded by Iris Garcia. Over the years, Iris has organized a group of professionals to teach classes in everything from finance to computer training which has helped so many women improve their lives and that of their families. Look for more on this in the future as they look to expand their outreach and will need community support.

A little-known non-profit, Taking Back the Girls, is also making a difference bringing about awareness on human trafficking. Founded by Gloria Martinez, a human trafficking victim herself, at age 12 for 5 years, she knows first-hand the importance of awareness for this issue and is doing something about it. Currently working on her PhD that involves a documentary with an awareness campaign, Gloria completed an installation of 1,626 bears representing the number of individuals the DCF shows in Florida as victims of human trafficking, part of her “Too Much to Bear” campaign. Just a week before the March 18th installation at St. Thomas University, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Civic Engagement Chair, Kristina Jackson, learned about the call out for bears and rallied the club, collecting 95 bears in just a few days that were delivered to Taking Back the Girls office. To learn more about Gloria Martinez’ and her life, look for her interview with Gloria Burns on Community Newspapers’ web site (cnews.net).

Aside from collecting bears, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club held two events of note on March 16th: a neighborhood clean-up and a party that night to honor its president, Ruth Martinez.

Coming up next is Gringo Bingo at Bay 13 Brewery & Kitchen in the Gables sponsored by Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, Dr. Jose Chaviano, Jerry Kavulich, Kim and Tom Davison as well as Kings Bowl in Doral, Bay 13 and Community Newspapers who provide great prizes every month. As always, music by DJ Germain and Steven Bradley as emcee make this a great party every time.

Finally, on March 5th, three hundred philanthropists gathered at Vizcaya for the 16th Annual Vizcaya Preservation Luncheon. Striking, colorful dresses and hats fashions worn by the assembled crowd made for hard decisions for the fashion judges who were tasked with picking the winners who included Marile Lopez for Most Avant Garde; Natalia Echavaria for Best Hat; and Nancy Mc Cormick for Best Ensemble. The affair was chaired by Christy Martin, Swanee DiMare and Eliah Beavers, a trio who produced a truly memorable event for all.

Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
