Arizona Woman Accepts Plea Deal After Poisoning Husband's Coffee, Attempting to Kill Him

Melody Felicano Johnson, 39, admitted to putting trace amounts of bleach in her husband's coffee pot and now faces up to four years in prison

An Arizona woman who was charged with attempted murder after she poisoned her husband has agreed to a plea deal.

Melody Felicano Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of adding poison or a harmful substance to food or drink, according to Pima County Superior Court documents obtained by CNN and local stations KOLD and KCRA. Johnson was originally charged with attempted first-degree murder and pleaded not guilty in August 2023, and the new charge is a lesser felony.

According to KCRA, Johnson faces a sentence range of four months to two years in prison for each count.

Johnson's attorney, a public defender, said she admitted to putting trace amounts of bleach in their coffee pot on July 11 and July 18, 2023, per KOLD.

The 39-year-old was first accused of poisoning her husband Roby Johnson's coffee in March 2023, when he noticed a "foul taste" in the beverage.

Roby, an Air Force member, was stationed in Germany with his wife when he first suspected his coffee was being poisoned, and he eventually used testing strips on his coffee and set up video cameras in an attempt to catch Melody in the act, according to court documents reported by CNN affiliate KVOA in August 2023.

A camera was placed in the couple's laundry room, a second was installed over their coffee machine, and a third was placed to show walking between the two areas.

Roby used pool testing strips that revealed his coffee pot "showed high levels of chlorine," and according to NBC, he set up multiple cameras that looked like fire alarms on the ceiling of the couple's home. He pretended to keep drinking the coffee in order to wait until they returned to the States to the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson before filing a police report, he told authorities.

The couple was living together with their child but were in the process of getting a divorce, CNN reported. Investigators said Roby "believes [Melody] was trying to kill him to collect death benefits."

Melody was eventually arrested on July 18, per NBC. Her bond was previously set at $250,000, as prosecutors argued that she was considered a flight risk because she recently bought a house in the Philippines.

Her sentencing is scheduled for May 10.
