"Next out to play was first doubles team Isaac Moran and Landon Stover. Like Mason, they split the first two sets 2-6, 6-3. The boys came back in the third set and put all of their energy and strength into making the third set count.

"Isaac's athleticism really was on display today as he flew from one side of the court to the other returning balls hit deep into the back court. They won their third set 6-4, securing a win."

McLOUGHLIN 0-14, DeSALES 5-4— The Pioneers and the Irish split their doubleheader in Milton-Freewater at Gib Olinger Elementary School.

The Irish, who came away with their record so far this season at 8-2-1, blanked the Pioneers in game one behind the one-hit pitching of Kate Dunham, as U-B reporter Roy Elia relayed, and Mac-Hi (3-5) won the nightcap on the strength of a six-RBI performance by Abi Perkins.

Dunham got DeSales on the board in the first inning of the opener when she deposited the second pitch from Pioneers' starting pitcher Addy Leonetti over the left-field fence for a solo home run.

Mac-Hi squandered scoring opportunities in both the first and third innings. It left two runners on base in the former and the bases loaded in the latter frame.

Dunham, who had three hits in the game, doubled with two outs in the fifth inning and scored on a Teresa Holtzinger single.

The Irish tallied three times in the seventh on a pair of base knocks. Dunham brought in one run and Roslyn Block drove home the final two.

Perkins recorded her first run batted in during second-game action on a bases-loaded walk. She added a two-out, two-RBI single in the fourth and a three-run triple in the fifth.

Mac-Hi scored three times in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie, added eight runs in the fifth after a two-run DeSales rally in the top of the inning, and a run-rule-ending tally in the sixth.

SUNNYSIDE CHRISTIAN 23-23, WAITSBURG 2-1 — The Cardinals struggled on the road at a Southeast 1B Conference West (Grape) Division doubleheader.

Defeats dropped the Cardinals record so far this season to 0-8.

WARDEN 1, COLLEGE PLACE 0 — The Hawks came up short on campus in a South Central Athletic Conference match.

Defeat left the Hawks league record so far this season at 2-6, ranking them sixth among the seven teams.

"Our defense showed some serious muscle, holding strong against a relentless onslaught," Hawks coach Santos Garcia stated in their report. "Despite multiple shots on goal, the ball just couldn't find its way into the net.

"It was one intense physical battle out there, but our team remained tough and determined throughout. We never backed down, playing with heart and guts until the very end.

"Though we ended up losing 1-0, we left it all out on the field going out on our shield."
